This is a great time to invest if you can afford to at all.
That said, I generally prefer alternative methods for consensus instead of proof of work. Unless you're putting all that electric usage to work actually accomplishing something the way SONM does, why be so wasteful?
But I know that mining some coins that can be mined with a simple CPU or GPU democratizes access to crypto, because people in many countries have a hard time being able to invest in crypto with fiat. They have already been locked out of fiat, so we don't want them also locked out of crypto.
This is one of the reasons I love Steemit so much. Here you can earn STEEM with "proof of brain" so everyone can participate, and energy usage is minimal.

Unexpected scenario tbh.Thise who invested in mining,bought all the equipment etc,I don’t think they are going to quit now...just because the price of electricity has risen. Unfortunately that town isn't talking about a guy who has some 2-3 mining rigs.
It's companies setting up shop ....filling up old 2000-4500 sq ft stores with mining rigs....im talking about 50-100 per shop.
Now im totally for one person setting up a rig or 2 maybe 3...
But im against a company exploiting this slight benefit of living in this town...because as you stated...it hurts the avg Joe with a much higher electric bill (which NY already has a very high one as is)
Look up Washington Kenny....there are towns just swamped by mining companies (including foreign ones)..
They should set up somewhere else....places like this do alot of damage not only to the average person but to crypto itself (you dont think average Joe is complaining to his mayor/elected officials about this? That's a given..)

my mining partner was actually headed there because of the low price and now this lol. Since he is invested heavily in the equipment he is not going to stop. It will be less profitable for sure but hopefully new miners won't be tempted to jump in. It makes proof of stake a whole lot more attractive
