Jeffrey Tucker on Left Versus Right, Thick Versus Thin & the Beauty of Free Market Cryptocurrencies

in bitcoin •  7 years ago

Last week at Freedomfest in Las Vegas I had the luxury to speak with Jeffrey Tucker, the prolific anarchist author and Director of Content for the Foundation for Economic Education (FEE).

Freedomfest, for us, was an anniversary of sorts as we first met at Freedomfest in 2012 and he was featured in the 35th episode of Anarchast... which is now over 350 episodes.

We've since become good friends and he spoke earlier this year at Anarchapulco.

Our conversation began talking about how unnecessary hyphens are in the anarchist world. We discussed how all these discussions between "thick versus thin" libertarians and "right versus left" anarchists were mostly ways to divide us and keep us from focusing on the true problem: statists.

But, quickly, Jeffrey wanted to get into cryptocurrencies which he says have invigorated his love for the free market as we see it playing out in the space on a daily basis.

Also, with Jeffrey's great understanding of Austrian economics he discussed why bitcoin meets the criteria of Mises' Regression Theory of Money.

That, alone, is worth watching the discussion.

You can see it all here:

By the end, he even pondered whether bitcoin has made gold obsolete. A question which I thought was a reasonable one!

Jeff Left typically means big government welfare, mass immigration, high taxes etc towards Communism. That would make you right wing (libertarian - anarchist) small or no government. The Left Right question is important.

Great work. Thanks for sharing.

Nice one.

Is he coming on board at steemit? We need him here! We're FB friends, but I would much rather be upvoting him and with steem and padding that bitcoin wallet. He was the one who first introduced cryptocurrency into my little world. He needs to be here!

agreed

Hmmm interesting comments on diamonds ... wr forget origin sometimes! Good to be reminded!

Great content @jeffberwick. Bitcoin and other altcoins are truely taking over the world of currencies and its only a matter of time before it completely immerse itself in every transaction. We are in a digital era and its only logical if digital currencies take over

#Secretive Cryptocurrency Hedge Fund Metastable Examined#

“There’s a Handful of, Say Between Five and 10 of These… [Cryptocurrencies]… That Could Be Trillion-Dollar Blockchains” – Joshua Seims, Metastable Co-founder."

Metastable Capital is a cryptocurrency hedge fund that has attracted investment from many top venture capital firms despite largely shunning publicity since its inception in 2014. Metastable was co-founded by Angellist CEO, Naval Ravikant, cryptography expert, Lucas Ryan, and former angel investor, Joshua Seims.

Fortune has reported that Andreessen Horowitz, Sequoia Capital, Union Square Venture, Bessemer Venture Partners, and Founders Fund are among Metastable’s major investors – all of whom participated in Polychain Capital’s fundraiser earlier this year.

Metastable takes a long term perspective when assessing the markets, aiming to invest in projects that it expects will be profitable over the course of at least a decade. “There’s a handful of, say between five and 10 of these major use cases that could be trillion-dollar blockchains,” Seims told Fortune. “It’s all very long-term focused, and we think we’re in super early days right now. It really comes down to which do we think is the strong enough technology, that we think can win.”

Gold as medium is absolete for quite a while already. It has value for its properties though. Diamonds are ultimately absolete as they have almost no utility at all hence being just a bloody way to make rich richer selling this vanity item.

Diamonds are far from obsolete as they are heavily used in industry; mainly as a cutting remidy, but also in a range of testing tools, like Vickers, Rockwell hardness test for instance, which requires larger single diamonds.

I believe you are refering to natural diamonds, which is inferior to industrial created diamonds in purity, and a price-level kept sky high by cartel regulations and very successful advertisement campaigns over decades. For those diamonds, I do agree with you. That is one bloated price-bubble I'd like to see pop as soon as posible.

Yes, I am referring to natural diamonds exactly. But i believe that this bubble won't pop as easily and so many people will continue to be exploited, crippled and killed in their mining.

I share your concern, and do not expect a sudden implosion either. There is also alot of people already "invested" in this gem - further reinforcing its position.

If you are looking for faster changes; play on peoples feelings, not reason. That's "not my cup of tea" though.

I totally agree with you on this one.

Diamonds are very useful. We use them all the time in engineering as cutting tools.

They are grossly overvalued though.

I doubt you are using natural diamonds in your cutting tools.

90% of all mined diamonds are used by industry.

Not every diamond is clear enough to be jewellery grade.

Are you saying that you are using diamonds in your tools, that had been dug in conflict zones?

It is impossible to find any sort of data or traceabilty for diamonds used in tooling because it is not one single gemstone like the jewellery industry.

It is a fine diamond powder which is bonded to a steel tool.

Having said that industrial grade diamond is so cheap compared to gem quality I would guess there is no need to cut corners and deal with dubious dealers.

My initial thinking was that industrial grade diamonds are mostly artificial.

If dubious dealers come in to possession of low grade diamonds, would they not offer a deal?

It's hard to believe that mines with poor ethical practices ONLY sell the highest quality diamonds. That's a weird concept.

I have liked your article and for this reason I will Upvote and follow you. I hope you do the same .Thank you.

Jeff thank you for all that you do and we upvoted

Crypto is the further!! Great Post, thanks for sharing with us!

Nice article, and yes bitcoin (and other cryptocurrencies) will probably make gold obsolete

And meanwhile the bitcoin !!!!!

I don't think Bitcoin has made gold obsolete, gold still has it's niche in that it is physical and therefore ultimately more durable, but Bitcoin does many things better than gold, such as divisibility, transport, and even scarcity. Gold is no longer the only game in town, now it has to share the "sound money" "store of value" "safe haven" space with Bitcoin.

For about a year or so now, I also started pondering the same idea that gold might just be not as valuable now that cryptocurrency is becoming a reality. When you think about it, cryptocurrency is more valuable because it is backed by knowledge, and I think we're now learning that knowledge can be a more liable asset to back a currency with because it's very real and probably the most valuable thing you can think of in the entire universe.

this was a good interview! thanks Jeff :)

Cute idea that state control over property is tyranny, whereas personal control over property is a fundamental right. The difference in truth is arbitrary. There is no objective ownership since all property is either based on first discovery (finders keepers, losers weepers rule from kindergarten) or more commonly violent seizure. We tend to absolve ourselves from the crimes of generations past, but the fruits of those crimes have been passed down to us (or not passed down if your ancestors were the victims).

So in reality the right to property is being assigned completely arbitrarily, but we each build an imaginary code of ethics depending on which view of property benefits us the most. If you control the property, of COURSE you'll argue that private ownership is the correct type of imaginary assignment of ownership. Why wouldn't you? Those who find themselves in possession of very little, on the other hand, might not see it that way.

I hope you like this philosophical musing. Seems like you enjoy philosophy, but I can't figure out where your assumption that "ownership" is real comes from. Curious.

Wow great post

I love Bitcoins!

awesome post here Jeff I'm not going to say that I think cryptocurrency has made gold obsolete. but I do think it's a fighting argument. great post and keep up the great posting I will be up voting this post as well as following.

Gold, platinum, palladium, silver, etc. are all heavily used in electronics and technology for their conductive and other special properties. Not to mention being used in fuel for spaceship/satellite launches. Precious metals obsolete... don't make me laugh

@bescouted did point out its practical value tbh. I can see that the OP could have some point on cryptos infringing on the precious metal market. However, in my personal opinion, to deem them obsolete seem too hard to me. I think their long track-record and being something physical (with a practical use) will make them keep a good portion of their value as a medium on top of the direct industrial demand.

Should the world situation turn really ugly, physical preciouse metals is a safer than bet than also cryptos in my book. Guess it comes down to once faith in humanity, and knowlendge of history...

I believe what was being said here is gold being obsolete as an investment security. Nobody is arguing gold's value as a utility for it's properties.

The thing that attracts me to crypto's is the fact that it is a truly free market economy. That makes it wild and unpredictable which may put off large institutions but is incredibly exhilarating to be part of.

Especially when an investment goes right.

I automatically respect anyone who wears a pink bow tie.
