Status of BTC in India was still not known and BJP's Kirit Somaiya (ruling party in India) tried to make BTC look like ponzi scheme to even make it banned.
But despite it... Bitcoin from now on is considered fully legal. The premiums are expected to disappear and volumes to raise.

If you never used LB just register, you never know when you can make some premum BTC sell there. Its available almost in all countries.

There are some good exchanges here in India like Zebpay and Unocoin. I personally do my tradings in pocketbits. It is fast and have a very good online customer support. Also they guarantee of average time of 59 minutes for account verification and buying BTC

If you google the btc rate in USD and multiply it by 64.5 to get INR, the value will be lesser than the buying rates on zebpay or any exchange in India. This rate also varies from market to market and exchange to exchange, for example the current BTC rate in usd is 2600, but bitcoin ATMs sell it for somewhere around 3300 dollars.
The only thing you can check is among the exchanges in India and among those exchnages what is the transaction fee and processing time, basis this you can select your exchange

You should consider coinsecure over zebpay
Reason 1- the difference in buying and selling is at same rate in coinsecure while there is a difference of almost 7000 rs in buying and selling price on zebpay
Reason 2- you can view the live exchanges/trading on coinsecure and not on zebpay

Hong Kong claim that they are the internatinal financial center, but their law system is just soooo old and don't want to push effort to change. Craziest thing about this isn't that India adopted but rather what that news didn't do to the price. I remember back in 2013 when every day it was seemingly:
India is HUGE news because it brings a population of 1 billion plus people to Bitcoin. If every citizen wanted to grab some Bitcoin, and I know its a ridiculous thought experiment, each could only get 0.021 equally.

I am from India and I think Zebpay is the most popular place to buy bitcoins. They only have a mobile app though. Prices are usually 5% above global rates, sometimes even 15% when there is high demand. Zebpay is pretty quick and hassle free. Prices are cheaper at coinsecure, but their website is a bit clunky. They were down for a week early this month due to overload. I think volume is quite low in India but we are trying our best to spread the word :)

i think this is just one step , Indian government is pushing hard for digital India , and bitcoin or digital currency acceptance is very likely if it helps in transparency and can help fight against fake fiat corrency , but their are so many governing and regulatory regulations has to be drafted .and i hope modi government is in full swing and in couple of years it will be on board .

Well, this is the good news! But, i personally think it will not be so easy as we are thinking. This is our government. They will restrict so badly that we will think, it was good when i was banned, later. Like, they have already designed ceiling by adding compulsion of PAN CARD on zebpay & other platforms.
I think, by legalisation of bitcoin in india will affect our economy because people will roll there money in bitcoin market rather than rolling in actual market. Why would any investor invest in risky market where bitcoin is secure & growing.
My point of view is nation's growth is also more important as ourselves.

Sorry to say bit Bitcoin is not officially legal in India. They are still discussing it, and most probably it won't be. The experts say that the cryptos with publically known and available developers/representatives etc. might be made legal, but not the ones with unknown identies like in case of Bitcoin. So Bitcoin legality is still far in India.

@kingscrown, I am from India and we are yet to hear that crypto currencies have been legalised. It is not yet legal though govt has given in that they cannot ban the usage of bitcoin and have cautioned the people against using it.
India is a risk averse country. Further India is under strife since decades due to its boundary issues with its neighbor country. It has lot of red tapism here that you might require over 15 permissions from different govt agencies to start a business. It could take months just running around to get permits sanctioned to open a business here. So Indian govt is naturally skeptical about the bitcoin because anything new and that too which cannot be understood by the powers that be in the govt is frowned upon.
Then came ransomware virus attack and bitcoin got attached with it (in news). as the attackers asked to be paid in bitcoin. So bitcoin gained notoriety with a section of people and also gained in popularity as Indians are safety conscious people too and safety of their data in their laptop from ransomware led to bitcoin. People started asking about bitcoin and that's how a surge started.
Recently govt has come out that it will be formulating the guidelines about crypto currency after consultation with their think tank and eminent citizen groups.
So there is no statement by Govt that it is legalized but only that govt will look into it and see if some guidelines or direction can be provided in digital currency arena.
India does not have a policy on affiliate marketing also known as MLM. Where as in USA there are hundreds of MLM companies operating freely, but in India those company officials get arrested for transacting biz. Inspite of multiple petitions since many years no regulations have been formulated yet and MLM workers still get persecuted. I am afraid bitcoin and crypto currency is no different.
So I am afraid we may have to wait a wee bit longer to hear any thing concrete or a firm regulation by the govt. in this matter.
I love crypto currency, and hope govt and RBI get this thing legalised, but having lived in India my whole life, it might be asking too much too soon.

This is good news but I am still hesitant as India did ban the 1,000 and 500 rupee note back in November. I also remember that the legislation to do so was done over a very quick turnaround and did not give citizens much time to prepare. As such, I would be a little concerned with quick legislation on Bitcoin making the already volatile crypto, even more so. That said though, I do think that given how many people there are in India who do not have banking access, Bitcoin could provide a good storage of wealth and an efficient method of trading across borders.
