DOGE Reddit TipBots Creator Stole Funds from Users (impossible to happen on STEEMit!)

in bitcoin •  8 years ago  (edited)

DOGE is a currency known for tipping people and there are 2 most popular places where tips happened - Reddit and IRC.

The bot were of course centralized, wasnt runned by DOGE Foundation but just by an user who made some bad business decisions, and seems stole DOGE to fix his problems.. then didnt buy it back.

Want to check if you had something? Go to http://dtb.space/
Then link you reddit username and you will end with such options [and balance above]:

It is said the bot had 108,911,472.26171964 DOGE that are missing.
At current prices its around 140k USD.

The "funny" thing is that 9 days ago the creator posted a PSA to watch for your funds:

Current DOGE Markets

Luckily we are on Steemit, here the upvotes are tips and they are on blockchain.

Another reason why Steeemit is a good place to be at.

That's why opensourced solutions are better for bot to scale or have flexibility and "trustless" setups...

Yeah for sure, im also pre open-source thats why im happy Steemit took down the license limits

That is just sad!

Yeah very..

II am reading some posts and hey, he is trying to fix it. So he is not as that bad person then.

If he fixes then i will post update, for now this post is facts only

Holy shit. I guess it proves the refrain about owning your private keys....

Wow thank God I'm here on steemit.

Yeah Steemit rocks with decentralization of tips

yea thats good we have streamit. I practically forgot about facebook jeje.

Well, Steemit Inc could in theory start stealing people's private keys with javascript.

You could have a browser extension which automatically checks for code changes, but I don't think anyone is using such a thing right now.

Yeah not sure how to prevent that or how thats exploitable. Maybe something that INC or other good coders here should address

It's perfectly preventable, there are browser extensions which protect against the same thing for other websites involving client side privacy/encryption. But people have to actually use the extension..

In the early years at least, the biggest protection are savings accounts and Steem Power, so that you don't lose everything instantly ust because you were hacked. The account recovery process can help with it too as long as the sponsorship of signups becomes more decentralized as well.

And of course while Steemit Inc holds a bunch of Steem Power, they'd only be destroying their own wealth by doing something like that. But it could be done by a rogue employee.

If you have em handy please share - ill get into this and i msure other users will benefit too. Maybe even make a post about it for awareness

The extensions I'm thinking of are custom made for the specific websites. I don't think it's a serious concern for now.

The really sad thing is what Mohland already had stolen the funds a few years ago to try and payback his failed business venture, and was operating Dogetipbot with fractional reserve since, and with the recent increase in value came in the difficulty in paying back as well as an increase in hacking attempts on accounts.

I personally didn't lose that much, less than 1 USD, so no biggie , but it does teach the most important lesson of all regarding cryptos : If you do not control your keys, you do not control the coins !

Yeah ive lost full 25 DOGE ;)) I dont keep coins on such bots

Steemit is great! No scams here.

Thank u kingscrown! very helpful keep posting & helping us! I am new to all of this blockchain tech, but as a financial guy invested in crypto already, Bitcoin & ETH. still keeping them without a wallet because I don´t know yet how to use it! so if you have some good tip about wallet and some other basic pls tell me! THANK U AGAIN! voteup, resteem & retweet ! =)

@klye is working on something similar for Steemit. I would hope Steemit is more secure than reddit, but I do wish we had 2 factor or something to improve it.

Tip bots are pretty much always 100% custodial. We'd be trusting @klye in the same way the Dogecoin community was trusting /u/moolah.

I'm going to be releasing a stripped down open source version people can run themselves.

Truth be told over time I'd make far more being productive and upstanding on the network than running off with some tip bot balance. The fees should be enough to pay for the server to run it, if not no big deal. Just add it to the list of operating expenses. :D

I see, that makes sense. Although it will vastly reduce the number of potential users, since most people will never run a server themselves. Would the bot be expected to have a separate account (so you don't give it your active key for your main account)?

No keys required! You send to @tippy, it auto creates your account and enables you to use the text to tip service. Still need to bullet proof it and get the remaining planned functionality done.

Someone is holding an active key with funds to send money. When it auto creates an account, what holds the keys to that account?

Congratulations @kingscrown!
Your post was mentioned in my hit parade in the following category:

  • Pending payout - Ranked 5 with $ 310,02

Much shock. Wow. Such steal.

Trust everyone, but cut the cards.

Haha - when you hold DOGE you deserve it.... lol.

Luckily we are on Steemit, here the upvotes are tips and they are on blockchain.

YES SIR!

Have an upvote! :)

Thanks for posting!

Shibes know not to byte the hand that feeds them. So, does anyone know who the thief is??

I used to use the tipbot a lot. Anyway, wasn't moolah the great money stealer of the mintpal exchange? When I found out mintpal incident I withdrew all my doge from this app. Didn't others care about it?

Phase 1: Steal funds > Pump the price > Hype the coin > Dump over noobs > Back to phase 1

Not sure if any of these crypto currencies are safe, well for that matter any currency.. ?

This won't happen on steemit.
By the way I can't seem to imagine how you get so many upvotes so fast. This post is just 5 minutes old and you have like 60 upvotes and only 8 views

Any why would you care of my upvotes?

Sorry. Just saying. Didnot mean to offend you.

I have one of best views and comments ratios here, just give it time to update. Ie my previous post:

Wow that's great. I apologize if I said something that offended you. I didn't mean to.

All good ^^

Cool.
Sorry once again. :)

I think you get so many upvotes because you have quality contents and always a large payouts, so many people are wating for your post to come out so they can upvote+bots may be following as well. Personally, I feel like crying when I do not see your post on time to upvote it. I just missed this one again. still upvoted. Following you alraedy

When someone is known as a very popular author, it's a race to the bottom to upvote them before everyone else. In doing so, the curators actually end up sending most of the rewards to the author.

When is the ideal time to vote though? I heard if I vote before 5 minutes I lose most of my curation rewards.

You want to maximize the percent of the reward which comes back to you, while also maximizing how many shares vote after you. The percentage you keep increases linearly from 0 to 100% until 30 minutes after the post.

So there is no set ideal time, you have to work it out based on when everyone else is voting. Honestly I don't think anyone but orcas and whales should care about curation rewards anyway, they're trivial for small accounts.

Right. Thanks.

Steem > DOGE

Doge 2.0

My macbook blocked reddit link, i just can open steemit, and steemit is happy Thanks @kingscrown

Wow such payout 10 minutes since publish much tip great post good work!

pick me pick me!

The reason people go easy on this guy is because Dogecoin wouldn't be where it is today without him. The tipping culture all over Reddit is what started the whole hype.
I don't agree with his actions, I don't agree with going easy on him, but I understand it.

  1. Make Nuts

  2. Crush Nuts

  3. Repeat

Here the upvotes are tips and they are on blockchain. With are great thanks for the info.

Funny indeed, people should always be aware for these things.
A price drop because of bad news is something we will overcome.
Steem is something powerful, if you see what we can build on the blockchain.. Amazing things will be available soon!

Scary and Precautionary info. I hope these dogs will return to their Genuine Masters... Maybe someday?

Go go Steemit!! Thank you
