This BTC wallet address seems like the weakest link for general use. I am a teacher and deal with people every day. I don't think it would be viable to expect the general population to be meticulous or concentrated enough to even copy/paste the right address. And I believe even any of us can make an odd mistake. It's up to us to decide how much a Bitcoin should be worth and estimating how much coins are lost will help with that. People have looked into it before, but not enough effort has been put into it and not enough data has been publicly shared in my opinion. It is very easy to make such addresses from a string. You just have to make some small adjustments to make that string a VALID Bitcoin address.

The lost Bitcoin is something I don't think a lot of people account for. blockchain.info shows just under 16.4 million bitcoins currently 6/4/17. I would think you can subtract a few million from that number.
