I'm trying to understand why only a few months ago it was so so expensive to send bitcoin. Like, in the 10's on dollars to send only a couple hundred. Now, it is back in the cents and dollar range. What is this all about?

lol... It's because you can make your own exchange rate - miner fee... You can mine your own fees. :D
