Google Bans Crypto Ads: Why This is Actually Good News (Short post)

in bitcoin •  7 years ago  (edited)

Remember all those scammy ICOs and phishing links of exchanges like Binance that usually appears after cryptocurrency-related Google searches? Yea. All those. GONE.

But wait..

How will good projects gain popularity now?

There are lots of better places to gain popularity for a blockchain project, like
By posting the project on:

  • Reddit
  • Bitcointalk
  • Here on Steemit
  • etc

If a project is actually good, it will gain popularity organically by word of mouth via articles/forum posts/YouTube vids/etc, without any need of running Google ads or any advertisement at all.

Also, take note that cryptocurrency-related advertisements on Google might not totally be banned.

To advertise through Adwords, advertisers will need to: “Be licensed by the relevant financial services authority in the country or countries they are targeting; Ensure their ads and landing pages comply with all Adwords policies; Comply with relevant legal requirements, including those related to complex speculative financial products; Advertisers can request certification with Google starting March 2018 when the application form is published. This policy will apply globally to all accounts that advertise these financial products.”

More requirements for cryptocurrency advertisers or no cryptocurrency ads at all in exchange for less people getting scammed and phished? That's a very good trade-off in my opinion.

I agree, there are lots of great videos and articles on medium

Yeah, I doubt this will have much of an impact on the market. Established traders and people who frequently invest in ICOs aren’t using google ads to find the most promising deals. New investment generally goes for btc or an established alt coin at least at first then progresses onto ICO so the market isn’t missing much there. The biggest ICOs sell out in minutes. The crap ones will struggle to hit targets but no big loss - they’re crap!

The sad thing is that even though the crappy ones doesn't get much publicity, they actually still make a lot of money.
