Blockchain games publisher Animoca Brands has acquired game company nWay, which is the company behind several Power Rangers games. There's $7.69 million involved in the deal. To fund the acquisition the blockchain games publisher loaned 1.72 million dollars for investors connected to the company.
The acquisition gives Animoca Brands direct access to the license for Power Rangers. The San Francisco-based game studio has a global license agreement with Lionsgate and Hasbro to develop and publish video games about the Power Rangers. These games are for PC, mobile and console platforms. The deal will be extended if certain revenue benchmarks are met by September 2020.
Currently Paramount is working on a new Power Rangers movie. This movie will supposedly be a reboot from the 2017 movie, which actually also was a reboot.
Besides the license for Power Rangers, nWay also has its own gaming platform called nWayPlay. It allows cross-platform multiplayer gameplay and cross-platform account progression. According to the game studio nWayPlay should make it very easy for developers to create cross-platform multiplayer games. Thanks to its low latency gamers can also use the platform for competitive multiplayer games. nWayPlay will launch next year.
Animoca Brands adding another license
CEO Robbie Yung is very good at licensing big brands for his company. Animoca Brands already has licenses for major sports like Formula 1, MotoGP and for example football club Bayern Munich. In addition the company has been investing in a variety of blockchain startups, including Sky Mavis, the company behind Axie Infinity.
The company wants to become the biggest company in blockchain games and is now planting its seeds. Animoca invested earlier in blockchain company Gamma, which gave them access to 60 million gamers that use Razer products. On top of that they’ve partnered with Atari.
