American online retailer Newegg now accepts bitcoin payments from customers worldwide. The online shop added 73 countries to its Bitpay payment platform, only blocking bitcoin payments from customers in Algeria, Ecuador, Egypt, Indonesia, Morocco, and Vietnam. This was announced by the ecommerce company this week.
Newegg stands as one of the early adopters of bitcoin payments. The online retailers started accepting bitcoin in 2014 and never stopped doing so. Where several services stopped supporting bitcoin when the transaction fees skyrocketed, Newegg kept supporting the digital currency as a payment option.
“Bitcoin allows users to send and receive money just as easy as sending an email, opening up opportunities for businesses and consumers globally as a secure, low-cost transactional option for the merchants,” said Sonny Singh from BitPay. “Newegg was among the first companies to see this opportunity and has continued to expand its Bitcoin acceptance to nearly all of its customers around the world.”
Commerce is finding more use for bitcoin over the years. Yesterday Albertsons and Safeway announced their collaboration with Lolli, offering bitcoin for purchases done at these American stores. Starbucks is rumored to jump on the bitcoin bandwagon as well, while the Japanese railroad company is getting into crypto payments as well. Even Twitch.TV, which has a rocky relationship with bitcoin, is currently allowing users to pay using bitcoin.
