Game engine developer Unity Technologies has filed a patent related to in-game cryptocurrency tokens. This comes from a document filed at the United States Patent and Trademark Office. The patent is all about unique identifiers that can be altered, transferred, swapped, exchanged, traded, given, and associated with a location physically and virtually.
The Unity game engine is used in many games, some say approximately half of the world's video games. Adding cryptocurrency features and blockchain technology into their engine will provide lots of options for adoption. Examples of games that are build on Unity are:
- Cities Skylines
- Hearthstone
- Ori and the Blind Forest
- Cuphead
- Overcooked
Last week Enjin (ENJ) saw a significant increase of value as it released a software development kit (SDK) for the Unity engine. This allows developers using Unity to create, integrate and manage ERC1155-compliant tokens on the Ethereum blockchain. This would also mean that gamers can use a virtual item in multiple games.
Another reason why Enjin has seen much growth recently, is its adoption into several mobile phones. The blockchain powered phone HTC Exodus 1 has support for Enjin's tokens, but even more significant is Samsung's next flagship phone: the Samsung Galaxy S10.
Blockchain games are still in their infancy. Network speeds, lack of adoption, creative ideas, new revenue streams and business models, still need to be adjusted, invented or embraced. Major companies like Ubisoft, Square Enix, Sony Playstation, Atari and Microsoft are showing serious interest in the technology. Independent developers are already making the first steps into blockchain gaming, and investors see lots of potential.
