PUNE: A conman and two aides duped a 49-year-old share trader from Loni Kalbhor of Rs 5 lakh under the pretext of selling him cryptocurrency at a cheap rate.
An officer from the Wakad police said the complainant met the conman at a mall in Hadapsar last week. He had told the complainant he was in the share trading business as well and lured him with the promise of selling cryptocurrency for Rs5 each cheaper than its current market rate
As decided the trader and three friends went to Ravet in the evening of May 2 with Rs5 lakh. “The scamster also reached there with two more men in a car without a registration number plate. He told the trader to come to a hotel in Tathawade to check and count the cash. The conman told the victim trader to come with one of his aides and one friend; the other aide was left behind in Ravet with the victim’s other two friends. Then they all left for Tathawade,” the officer said.
After reaching the hotel, the man told the trader to book a room. He told the trader’s friend to wait in the lobby with him, and sent his accomplice to the room to check the cash. “The accomplice went to the room, checked the cash, and told the complainant he would recount it in a machine and return with the cryptocurrency,” the cop informed.
