Bitcoin is here to stay, at least for a while. One way that bitcoin will be abandoned is when all the 21 million bitcoin have been mined and miners only get compensated by transaction fees. The fees would increase significantly since miners have to pay for the electricity, mining gear and maybe cooling.
Would you be willing to spend a lot of bitcoins for paying transaction fees while sending bitcoins? A cheaper alternative would be found by bitcoiners.
