If you use Exodus wallet, you will know that it gives you control to private keys. After installing it, you will remember that you had an option to backup your wallet; which generates for you a private key to save, from which you can restore your wallet, incase you have to move to another PC etc
More recently, however, if you are holding bitcoin on Exodus or have recently exchanged some of your other assets for bitcoin in anticipation of a probable bitcoin split, August 1 and resulting free bitcoin cash tokens, you may have wondered how to get the private keys for each asset on Exodus and in this case bitcoin.
With your bitcoin private keys, you will be able to claim free bitcoin cash tokens, by importing your private keys onto a bitcoin cash chain!
Overall, there are likely going to be several user-induced splits based on what i have been reading here on steemit but i have picked interests in proposals from the @bitshares community from Bitshares Dex, e.g @stan and @cm-steem, who have announced their intentions for Bitcoin-United
Bitshares is a decentralized exchange giving you control of your keys. So basically, you will be able to have additional free tokens of whatever digital currency results from the split, in equal proportion to the amount of bitcoin you possessed; e.g if you had 1 Bitcoin before the split, you should be able to claim 1 Bitcoin Cash token and perhaps, 1 BTC-United token (Values for each determined)
Overall, i am not sure how the Bitshares Bitcoin-United will work but according to a post by @stan here, bitshares will take a snapshot of the blockchain before August 1, to determine how to distribute Bitcoin-United tokens.
I am not very versed with things like this but it is only logical that if @bitshares gives you control of your bitcoin private keys, then should be able to claim some Bitcoin Cash tokens as well by importing these keys on a Bitcoin Cash chain.
We aren't not very certain about Bitcoin's August 1 aftermath, so my decision will be to move my minute Bitcoin to Bitshares Dex, after i have found out how to import private keys for my Bitcoin Wallet! Hopefully there will be comments on this post to help matters.
Back To Exodus
If you are sticking with keeping your bitcoin on Exodus, you must be interested in how to import the private keys for bitcoin.
Here is how to get your private keys:
You simply have to go to developer mode, if you are using Mac:
On Windows PC, it is slightly more technical as the developer tab is missing. However, you can make them appear simply by pulling up the Exodus interface; then while your cursor is on it, Press control + shift + D.
This will bring out the tabs on the top right as seen below:
I am looking for advice on the following:
I am a fan of @bitshares; being that it has the community, that precedes steem and has the same owner and similar features to steem, in terms of speed etc. Also, it is decentralized unlike others popular exchanges like Poloniex and Bittrex.
@stan and @cm-steem, i would appreciate it, if you had time to add to the comments here. I think one basic thing that is missing for @bitshares is incessant organic blogging solely promoting bitshares.
There are limited resources about bitshares on the search engine, to curb on the high learning curve involved with using bitshares Dex.
However, looking at the facets on bitshares, especially the UIA feature, bitshares should easily be a home for the dreamers and for bring visions to reality and with steemit now present, Bitshares can easily be made to thrive and become mainstream, if publications are written constantly about bitshares, here on steemit.
I have a community called #steemgigs, i can incentivize them to do more research into Bitshares DEX and create #til content, solely to explain and highlight features of bitshares, to breakdown that learning curve involved and make it a home or the favorite exchange to go to, for steemians.
It is easier than it looks to accomplish this.
Your boy Terry

Thank you for creating this guide. With how confusing things get when dealing with bitcoins I am sure this will help many people out! It is centrally interesting how complex August First could be. I admit trying to turn a blind eye to it somewhat as it’s a bit over my understanding how far reaching and lasting the effects could be.

I did a little bit of mining back in 2012-2013 I believe around then. In cryptocurrency years that is old news! I don’t have the best memory, and find myself struggling more then I should getting back into the swing of these. It’s not like I do have to set up my wallet, miners, and run short batch scrips to get things working anymore hehe. Its just nice and simple to make blogs which I prefer way more than staring at a dark screen keeping an eye on my little blockerupters and making sure I was not damaging my cpu, and graphics card lol.

Sounds like a good solution but I feel much safer with the majority of my coins in a hardware wallet. I do like the look of bitshares though and I have done some reading up on this and after the dust has settled, I think Ill start using that to trade.

Interesting write up. I haven't had a chance to explore bitshares yet, but from what I've seen it does look promising.
I gave EtherDelta a try the other day (another decentralised exchange, but Ethereum based of course) and that was pretty simple to use.
Not as easy as the steem internal market, but not much different either, if you know what I mean?
The other option might be Bittrex, from what I've read; they're going to be getting their customers BCC when it comes out. There might be some other exchanges doing the same thing too.
Two that aren't are CoinBase and BitStamp. If you want BCC? You're not going to be getting it from them unfortunately.

@surpassinggoogle - Thank you for this detailed article on private keys in Exodus wallet. It is always important to have control of private keys if we use third party wallets. Thanks. Upvoted

Great post and as an Exodus user, I've followed this advice - thanks! However, have you found any good Bitcoin Cash wallets yet where you can import the keys and thus redeem your Bitcoin Cash when the time comes?
