Bitcoin Based Digital Diplomas

A second college announced that it is putting it diplomas online. Last month, MIT announced that it put over 100 diplomas on the Bitcoin blockchain using Blockcerts, an app they developed in 2016. The essence of the technology is that it enables perspective employers security of knowing the information on the blockchain is verified and true. Basically, the students receive a private key which they can forward to companies who then can access the chain to verify the information.

At the time of the announcement, MIT said other educational and institutional entities were looking at the technology as a way to secure their records while giving more power to the owners of those records. Now, Central New Mexico Community College is going to start issuing diplomas in the same manner starting Dec. 15th of this year.

This is just the beginning of a huge transformation in the public record keeping arena. Over the next 5 years, I predict you will see most governmental and educational institutions handling their records in a similar manner.

Many want to slam Bitcoin for being slow, costly, and basically useless. However, the one advantage the bitcoin has is security, even at the expense of those other traits. This is one ideal application for this blockchain and, with the development of platforms by these different schools, most likely the defacto system that will be followed.

It will be interesting to see how quickly this becomes widespread and if this is the technology that is used.
