A massive blow strikes the long established cryptocurrency exchange BTC-e as Alexander Vinnik a Russian man with control over administrative functions at the exchange was tied back to money laundering for the original Mt. Gox hack in 2014. Vinnik is lead to court in Greece today above.

The indictment describes Alexander Vinnik, 37, a Russian citizen, as the owner and operator of multiple BTC-e accounts, including administrator accounts, and also a primary beneficial owner of BTC-e’s managing shell company, Canton Business Corporation.

It's clear Vinnik had an important role at the exhange.

“BTC-e was noted for its role in numerous ransomware and other cyber-criminal activity; its take-down is a significant accomplishment, and should serve as a reminder of our global reach in combating transnational cyber crime,” said Special Agent in Charge of the USSS Criminal Investigative Division Michael D’Ambrosio.

BTC-e has been assessed a fine of $110 million by FinCEN, which in light of extreme circumstances, effecively closes their doors.

Vinnik himself faces a fine of $12 million and 55 years in prison.

Did BTC-e shutting down affect you?
Does this large of a fine seem appropriate?

I had some bitcoin on the BTC-e exchange and at first i was upset that i had most likely lost my coins but its not about my coins. Its about catching the guy who stole billions of dollars worth of bitcoin from many people and maybe not me in direct but in the end he has been caught which will help crypto currencies grow! Big win today and although it feels like a lost right now for me i know that later down the road it saves me from someone like him to take many more coins from other people!
