(This is an excerpt from my own article on my blog. Today is Bitcoin Pizza Day..so I thought everyone should remember it and read it. Do visit my blog to check out my whole write up!! Thanks)
If Bitcoin were a religion, today would be an auspicious day celebrated all across the world. It mostly is. 22nd May is held in very high esteem in the cryptocurrency world. Though Satoshi Nakamoto worked his brains out from the whole of 2007 and introduced “his / her / their” whitepaper on 31st Oct 2008 and later mined the Genesis Block on 3rd Jan 2009; it was 22nd May 2010, which actually brought the Satoshi idea to fruition.
The Pizza Transaction
On 22nd May 2010, a programmer by the name of Laszlo Hanyecz, had hunger pangs while chatting on a Bitcoin Talk forum. It is there that he made an offer (on May 18, 2010), to buy a couple of pizzas with 10000 bitcoins (BTC). The following is the snapshot of the offer made on the Bitcoin Talk forum.

After 4 days, he made a deal with and paid a fellow Bitcoin Talk forum user “jercos”, 10000 BTC for two Papa John’s pizzas.

This was still not actually a direct purchase because no mainstream retailer in those days was accepting Bitcoin as a form of payment. So Laszlo had to trade his 10K bitcoins with another user for making this transaction happen. Though this was not the first bitcoin transaction, however, the reason why this day is so celebrated is because, it was on this the day Bitcoin really came into its own in the real world – “our” real world. (More on the real world in later stories).
