BitShares.Crypto.fans online again and current issues

in bitshares •  7 years ago

TL;DR

BitShares Full Node from Crypto.fans is once again accessible.

TLD Registrar gives issues for domain management, but will hopefully be cleared within a few weeks.

Node Address: wss://bitshares.crypto.fans

As I wrote a few weeks ago, I had issues with my domain crypto.fans, Crypto.fans BitShares Node Temporarily Inaccessible.

The issue arose due to the lack of support from the registrar of .fans domains, Fan Domains Limited, where the domain was registered, and DNS managed.

Current Issue; What Happened

My trouble started about one month ago when I was going to add a new server for hosting the BitShares Access Node, bitshares.crypto.fans.

The DNS manager was inaccessible, and the only error that I got was that there had been an unexpected error, which later made me aware of how complex the new TLD domains are set up.

  1. My Registrar, Fan Domains Limited, is a TLD reseller of the .fans domains.
  2. They use a registrar hosting company, which turned out to be unresponsive in this issue leaving both me and the registrar alone. They were providing Fan Domains Limited with interfaces for customers etc.
  3. The registrar hosting company uses a hosting company in themselves, LogicBoxes, which is currently looking into resolving the issue with their legal and compliance department.

The current problem was supposed to be fixed at the end of last week, but as I can imagine this will take its time, and my registrar most likely has their hands full with other customers getting pretty angry at them.

The Good Parts

The domains that were set up will still work. The DNS manager server seems to be working. The domain bitshares.crypto.fans still point to the old server; which made me take the solution of moving back to the old server since I solved a few issues that caused me to migrate.

The Bad Parts

I can not add or edit the domain, nor can I move it to a new registrar. As soon as I can administer the domain again, I will initiate a move of it.

What I've learned

I've learned that the new TLD registration gives a lot of new cool names like .fans, .me, .taxi or whatever, but that they are managed by highly inexperienced personal and most likely very short staffed.

I had my suspicions regarding all these new TLD flooding the market once they announced them a few years ago, and I guess I had my suspicions acknowledged, even though I was most likely highly unlucky this time.

I don't know if this would have helped but I usually change the nameservers from the registrar provided ones to CloudFlare.

Unfortunately since I don't have access to managing the domain I can't change nameservers either. My normal registrar that I usually use, joker.com, a German company (who else for high precision and accuracy 🤣), have a very reliable service and is usually the one use.

Yeah, best to stick with the well known & established domain registrars - I use namecheap.

They didn't allow me to register the domain for some reason, and I blame the lack of professionalism from Fans Limited for that now, and is the reason I went with them directly instead.

I should have moved the domain as soon as it was cleared...
