#BlackCatBrigade Photo Contest With A Twist!

in blackcatbrigade •  7 years ago  (edited)

Welcome to the first #BlackCatBrigade Photo Contest with a Twist!

This will hopefully be a repeating contest. Each time around there will be a theme/challenge for you to photograph, with a twist to it!

This month’s theme is… Black cats!

There are two ways to enter this contest, please read the entire post.

You don’t have a black cat you can photograph? That’s fine! You don’t need your own!

The challenge for this contest is to go to a local shelter/rescue/sanctuary. Do they have a black cat there? Good! Ask if you can take a photograph of the black kitty! (They may be much more willing to let you photograph the cat if you let them know that you'll be promoting that that cat is up for adoption, shelters/rescues/sanctuaries need all the help they can get!)

In your photograph, include a card with your Steemit name, the cat’s name, and the name of the shelter/rescue/sanctuary where the cat resides. (If the cat is up for adoption, make sure to include that, as well!)

Ask the facility about the cat you photograph. Include information you learned about the cat, along with the website and contact information for the shelter/rescue/sanctuary. If there is information about the cat on their website, you must provide information about the cat that is not on their website. No cheating!

Other rules:
*Cat must be black.
*No black and white photography
*No photoshop
*No excessive filters.
*Photo MUST contain a card with your Steemit name handwritten and legible, the cat’s name, and the name of the rescue/shelter/sanctuary on it, as well as #BlackCatBrigade
*Upvote this post.
*You may submit your entry by either leaving it in a comment on this post or by making a post of it using #BlackCatBrigade as the first tag and #BlackCatBrigadeTwist as the second tag, as well as a link back to this post.

Because this contest requires you to venture out into the world in search of a black cat, you have until July 31st to submit your entry.

Let’s go out there, take some cool photos, and promote some awesome animals that need forever homes and the organizations caring for them!

Due to this being a new contest, the prize pool will be determined by the payout of this post.

ALTERNATIVE METHOD OF ENTRY

Do you have your own black cat, or does a friend have a black cat that you can snap a picture of? Awesome! You may submit a photograph of that cat (with a card containing your Steemit name and #BlackCatBrigade), and then find an online adoption profile for a black cat that needs a forever home and link that with your entry.

Good luck everyone!

Please consider resteeming this post to get more entries and to increase the prize pool.

It´s a bit discriminating against otherwise colered cats .
So , sorry , no just no , wont do . it´s out of balance .

It's a theme. For this specific round of the contest. The theme will shift around. It won't be black cats every time. (It won't even be cats all the time.)

Other colors of cats have a much higher chance of being adopted. Black cats are less likely to be adopted.

Saying that it's discriminating is like saying that the daily color challenges discriminate against every other color. Which is a bit ridiculous.

Participating is your choice. Don't want to participate? That's fine.

But please don't use this as an opportunity for virtue signaling.

Black cats are less likely to be adopted ? why ? badluck and withcraft ?
There just cat's to . But you may have a point there .

So succes with getting black cat's out of there negative reputation .
Never tought they where in that corner , i like black cats a lot .

I hope your post wil find new homes for many of them .
Where i live collered and black cats heve equal chances .
A perfect total black cat has a certain status here , there hard
to find in a animal shelter . They are easy and loving from nature
, a better pet around children as a red or siam cat .

I didn't realize that it's not the case world wide , sorry for that .

Black cats are the least likely to be adopted here and much more likely to be euthanized in kill shelters (some kill shelters just euthanize black cats immediately upon their arrival, they don't want to even bother trying to save them) here in the US (and most of North America, really). They're also more likely to be abandoned, neglected, and abused.

For those reasons you listed, and some that no one even really seems to know or understand. And then you have the Instagram generation, which has added a new reason to not adopt black cats, that reason being that black cats are harder to photograph because of how their fur interacts with light sources, including the flash of a camera. (I am not kidding and I really, really, really wish I was.)

The idea for this photography contest with a twist is to explore many different things (Some contest rounds won't even be about animals.), but I will regularly use it to promote the adoption of animals in general. Black cats have a very special place in my heart, so I'm starting out with them. But there will be different animals, different colors, and different specifics to future Twist contests.

I very much appreciate and accept your apology. Thank you.

This is a great idea! I will resteem! And, I'll check to see if there are any black cats at our local adoption place which we visit regularly- inside the local Petco. ;)
I love black cats! We have two that live next door - one is a manx named "Bear". The other one is Miko. I'll see if I can get a photo of one of them in the next couple of days.

Welcome to the #BlackCatBrigade!

I'm glad you like the contest idea! If you have any local PetsMarts, they have adoption centers as well. And I've lived in El Paso, Phoenix, and Kansas City, and all three very often had black cats.

You can also contact the shelter that is responsible for the cats in the adoption centers of these stores, as the shelters are not part of the actual stores, but outside organizations being given space to use to adopt cats out. (I apologize if you already knew this information, I have had to explain this to hundreds of people over the years, so it's something I like to cover when speaking about this subject.)

You're more than welcome to submit multiple entries.

You also may like the writing contest and art contests that I'm also hosting under the #BlackCatBrigade. We're also a (very small at the moment) Steemit community, which you can also find information about in my recent post history.

I look forward to seeing your entry! Black cats rule!

Awesome! And, yes, I knew that stuff already, but others may not - so good to post it. :)

If you aren't already aware, you might be interested in @everlove's art collaborations she hosts - called "Collaborative Art Journey" She posts a photo (oh every couple weeks or so) and other people create art out of her photos - in all sorts of ways. I actually did one with black cats in it a few months ago here:

Here is the most recent gallery from the last image she posted:

It's a pretty cool group of people that has been steadily growing. You may be able to reach out to some of them to get them involved with your Black Cat Brigade.

I was completely unaware of that community!

That is a really fantastic idea! Thank you so much for that information!

By the way, thanks for the resteem! Sorry, forgot to thank you earlier.
