Bladerunner 2049 - review

in bladerunner •  7 years ago  (edited)

I am a big fan of the original film, first released in 1982. It was revoluntionary, its dystopian view of the future and stunning visuals left audiences stunned and confused, it wasn't a hit. I think audiences will feel similarly confused with this film, expecting a sci-fi blockbuster what they actually get is a similarly paced film to the original. with a bit more action. At nearly 3hrs it is a long watch, and yes there moments when its slow. Audiences are rarely asked to invest in a film, the modern blockbuster doesn't ask you to think to deeply about themes, it provides a entertaining and thrilling ride, leaving you entertained as you leave the cinema. If you are expecting the same from Bladerunner 2049 you will be disappointed, so what have you got - a long sci-fi film, slow paced and not as action led as other films.
Having said all this, THIS IS ONE HELL of a film. When I heard there was going to be a sequel to the legendary original, I thought it would be okay, but nothing special, I was skeptical. Then I started seeing reviews, everyone 5 out of 5, so thought I better go and see it.

This is a visually stunning film, that transports you into a dystopian future taking the design of the original and themes and expanding them hugely. Its plot is more direct than the first film, there are more twists and turns and a few surprising aspects. It is a darker and even more dystopian vision than the original. This film questions our possible future; it explores the existensial crisis between ourselves and technolgy in a way no film, has dared. It is nearly impossible to tell who is a replicant and who is not. More Human than Human - themes from original are blown apart and explored in more depth.

The acting is top notch, the plot at times mind boggling, this is science fiction of the highest order..it will make you think.

A film that dares to ask deep meaningful questions, emotional, thought provoking, unsettling..it has no equal. Be prepared to have your mind blown. I left the cinema stunned. I need to see it again. A future classic that will leave you unsettled but will never leave you. The best sci-fi film of the last 30 years. BRILLIANT
