There is only so much arable land on this planet with quite a good chunk in Eastern Europe. The best way for these multinational companies to prevent a future unfriendly nationalistic govt from reversing their gains is to flood the countries with rapefugees but the first step is to put military bases on the land which obviously are intelligence outposts and serve a way to build relations with and control the military of that country. If an unfavorable govt to their interests be elected they will then use the military to overthrow it.
