The Edge Mask from the Great Blender Node Group

in blender •  6 years ago

Detecting edges in Blender with the help of nodes is a great thing. It gives shape to the model and make them better looking.
In the past, to detect edges on a model, I have been using the pointiness feature from the geometry node. I think it is still a great way to do this, even now, when there is a dedicated AO node in Blender 2.8. Link to a previous post on the poitiness.

Here I will try out the edge mask from the node group recently presented. The edge mask is a very useful mask. Yet, in order for it to work it need some tweaking.
The node itself has a total of five masks. In the previous post I have presented four of them, each one individually, and combining the different nodes. The node group is created by Youtuber Wayward Art Company. Many thanks to him.

I have tested the node and done the tweaking and the model looks as the above.
Here is the node tree for this.

It is a very basic setup, basically just mixing colors with the help of the edge mask node from the node group and a mix node.

The important thing here is to setup the values from the edge mask. The edge mask have a total of 4 values. Here is the values that I used:

  • Edge scale 120
  • Edge Noise 0.4
  • Edge Scratches 0.3
  • Edge Frequency 0.2

The most noticeable thing here is that the Edge Scale value is high. You need to bring it quite high in order to work. Especially if it is a high poly model. For the testing I have done this is the case. If you are having problems with no edges showing bump the value up 😊.
