Blessed by the law of the Lord: Let me live that I may praise you, and may your laws sustain me. Psalm 119:175

Psalm 119 is a song dedicated to teaching the excellencies and blessings of the law of the Lord for man; the Psalm is also a song of thanksgiving, because through the law, God shows to man the way to reach him. And in this hymn, its author wisely shows that the law is more than the fulfillment of simple precepts, principles for living, or imperatives. How can men worship God and serve his eternal law if they do not have a prepared heart?
Spirituality in man begins with the fear of God; the spiritual gift of fear of God is defined as constancy, firmness, devotion, equanimity, and stability.
In essence, the fear of God is that heart of flesh through which men can somehow see the world with the eyes of God. And by this spiritual gift man is blessed by the law of God, because the meaning of the law is not to oppress or deceive man but to teach him the way to the true life. Men have to obey the precepts that the divine law commands, says the psalm, but men also have to know how to interpret them with common sense, because there are situations in which the law cannot be fulfilled in its entirety, like when David, moved by the hunger, took the bread consecrated in the temple.
With these words the Psalmist ended the Psalm, recognizing the sovereignty of God in the world and how the creator of all things protects and blesses his devotees:
"May my lips overflow with praise,
for you teach me your decrees.
May my tongue sing of your word,
for all your commands are righteous.
May your hand be ready to help me,
for I have chosen your precepts.
I long for your salvation, LORD,
and your law gives me delight.
Let me live that I may praise you,
and may your laws sustain me.
I have strayed like a lost sheep.
Seek your servant,
for I have not forgotten your commands" Psalm 119:171-176.
