Psalm 40 is the song of a man devoted to God who sings a praise to God for the blessing received. Ultimately, what this Psalm teaches is that those who fear God and not men have a path free of stumbling rocks, that is, free of destructive unforeseen events, towards true life, which in the Christian faith is called eternal life or contemplative life. The Psalm 40 speaks then not about simple faith, but about a trust in God that is born from a creator who manifests himself and becomes evident to man through his signs, wonders, and miracles; Noah, Abraham, Moses, and David trusted in God, and because of this assurance, they were blessed greatly in due time.
This is why the Psalm begins with these simple and wise words:
"I waited patiently for the LORD;
he inclined to me and heard my cry" Psalm 40:1.
The spiritual life, or blessed life, is not a life related to pleasures or the immediacy of things, but a life that takes time to produce its fruits, and when it does, it demonstrates its greatness and mercy (compassion, kindness, gentleness).
This is why the Psalm continues with a beautiful beatitude to explain how is the path of the righteous men:
"Blessed is the man who makes
the LORD his trust,
who does not turn to the proud,
to those who go astray after a lie!" Psalm 40:4.
And among the blessings that God gives to those who live in the spiritual gift of fear of God ( constancy, firmness, devotion, and equanimity) is the gift of wisdom, which is essentially a heart that knows how to listen, because God is not pleased with a spirituality of masks and appearances, but with a heart willing to do what is correct because it is the correct thing to do.
In this way and as a reminder of the blessing that Solomon received in Gibeon after being crowned King of Israel, the Psalm expresses the generosity of God:
"In sacrifice and offering you have not delighted,
but you have given me an open ear.
Burnt offering and sin offering
you have not required" Psalm 40:6.
Psalm 40 is a reflection on the importance of seeking God and avoiding the path of error that tempts men so much.
