The master of wisdom Ben Sira taught in his sapiential book that wisdom is more than a pearl of great price or a hidden treasure to explain this mystery and blessing, because sometimes metaphorical comparisons are not enough, wisdom is a science and at the same time a spiritual gift with a profound practical meaning for the spiritual salvation of man. Ben Sira taught how the perfect wisdom of God shaped the history of the people of Israel through its most notable characters to show the importance of the divine plan, a plan that had to be perfected with Lord Jesus.
And so Ben Sira mentioned the priest Phinehas who in the Book of Numbers prevented the Israelites from falling into idolatry, and so God rewarded him by making a pact with him and his descendants: "A covenant of friendship was established with him, conferring on him the right to be in charge of the sanctuary and of the people" Ben Sira 45:24. And the teacher of wisdom also mentioned the pact made with David, when this King, after securing the borders of his kingdom and establishing Jerusalem as the capital, set out to build the first temple of the holy city. God's wisdom was made concrete in these spiritual covenants that blessed Israel and gave it a clear purpose.
And thus Ben Sira continued with his praise of that wisdom that accompanies the creator since the beginning of all things. Because there is also another spiritual covenant that God made with men, and that is not mentioned much in the Bible, and that covenant is how the only Lord blesses man with his wisdom to bring him closer to him, and so that his creature knows the truth, and so he can practice the law of Moses with integrity because as the teaching says: "Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the whole duty of man", Ecclesiastes 12:13.
That is why Ben Sira invoked the creator and recalled how these remarkable men were blessed with their wisdom, also asking for this beautiful gift for all God-fearing men:
"May he grant you wisdom of heart
to govern his people in justice,
lest the benefits you confer should be forgotten,
or your authority, throughout all time" Ben Sira 45:26.
