채굴이란 비트코인이 거래되는데 필요한 컴퓨팅 파워를 제공한 네트워크 사용자의 보상을 위해 설계된 제도로서 최초의 보상은 50BTC였다.
1BTC는 2017년 9월 10일 현재 470만원이고, 최근 1주일 간 460~530만원을 왔다갔다하고 있다.
채굴(Mining)을 위해서는 인터넷에 연결되어 있는 온라인(Online) 상태의 컴퓨터 혹은 기타 컴퓨팅장치가 필요하다.
