The Materials World team has some research to do, as Australian technology initiative, the Blockchain Application Centre, has began reopening the Redbank power station in the Hunter Valley, Australia.
The power plant is expected to be reopened in 12 months, and will supply blockchain companies with energy at wholesale prices, although a spokesperson from Hunter Energy said they expect only 5% of the plant’s output to be used in blockchain-related activities.
Blockchain is one of the most promising tech developments in recent years, although it has yet to permeate significant work in materials science. It is believed that global blockchain activities demand as much energy as Denmark and Singapore. Should the Redbank reopening prove successful, it will be interesting to see the blockchain’s influence on energy developments.
