Coinbase, Kraken, and several other exchanges have jointly stated that the tragic case of Mt. Gox was the act of one company and does not reflect the resilience of bitcoin itself.

The perpetrators of the hack into Mt. Gox "remain a mystery," and only one Russian named Alexander Vinnik has been implicated as laundering the stolen bitcoins, Walbroehl said.

Nonetheless, the Mt. Gox hack not only failed to kill bitcoin, it led to improvements and innovation.

And Mt. Gox's current legacy is the idiom "not your key, not your coin," said Caitlin Long .
