Indeed there has been a sharp drop in the price of bitcoin and other altcoins after South Korean cryptocurrency exchange Coinrail and Bithumb were hacked, meanwhile, 51% of attack performed on some blockchain networks (ie: BTG, Zencash) also impacting the entire valorization of cryptocurrency market.
We have made a compilation of the hacks done in June 2018:
Crypto Exchange hack
Bithumb
This week, the South Korean cryptocurrency exchange Bithumb announced that $30 million (35 billion won) worth of undisclosed cryptocurrencies had been stolen from the platform on June 20.
Bithumb, the sixth largest cryptocurrency exchange in the world and South Korea’s second-largest cryptocurrency exchange by trading value (according to Coinmarketcap), has suspended all deposits and withdrawals after the apparent hack. This Seoul-based company claims that "the entire customer's assets are in a secure cold wallet" and that the wallet's operating platform is not directly connected to the Internet.Coinrail
Another major exchange platform has been also attacked only for less than two weeks, exposing the high risk of cryptocurrency transactions.
Coinrail, a smaller South Korean cryptocurrency exchange (the world’s 90th largest crypto trading platform as stated in Coinmarketcap) revealed that it was hacked with losses of $37.2 million (40 billion won) in cryptocurrency on June 10, including a variety of ERC-20 tokens.
Although blockchain offers safety measures, hackers are still finding loopholes to get a bite of your cryptocurrency. And it hasn’t started recently, there are records showing that there was a hacking back to 2011. (check Cryptocurrency theft history from 2011 to 2017)
51% of attack performed on some Blockchain networks
Apart from hacking the cryptocurrency exchange platform, the investors can also lose their coins due to 51% of attackwithin the network combined sometimes with double spending or selfish-mining attack which are methods using to manipulate the network and the state of the ledger regarding transactions. This kind of attacks is performed on vulnerable blockchain network where decentralization and hashing power were not enough to protect against that.
Monacoin, Bitcoin Gold, Zencash, Verge (x2 times) and Litecoin cash. At least five cryptocurrencies have recently been hit with an attack that used to be more theoretical than actual, all in the last month.
Zencash
A malicious miner successfully executed the attack on Privacy-centric cryptocurrency ZenCash (ZEN)— as well as at least three double spends — against the cryptocurrency’s network on June 2.Litecoin cash
Litecoin cash allegedly hit by 51 percent attack on May 30 and the Litecoin Cash team acted fast on news of the attack and contact exchanges immediately, increasing the block confirmation level to 100 to make it more difficult for one to control.
How to prevent your Crypto from Hacks and Theft?
Use cold storage for protecting large sums and private keys. Synchronize your wallet, often back up your wallet. Use Hardware wallet like Trezor or Ledger to secure your fund.
Don’t let your money sleeping on an exchange if you are not a daily trader.
