On Monday I was invited by Jonathan, one of the guys behind a company called Blockdata, to come by at their office in Amsterdam. I met Jonathan on a Waves meetup a few weeks ago.
When we met, Jonathan and I talked briefly about what he and his co-founders, Lucas and Niels, are working on and it immediately got my attention.
The main reason for that is that Blockdata is working on something that is going to save me and others in the crypto space a lot time. Time spent on blockchain project research, that is.
Even though I like researching projects, it takes a lot of time to collect the most up to date and reliable information. Blockdata is aiming to collect and display complex information about blockchain project in an easy to consume way.
The main motivation for starting Blockdata was the fact that the guys didn’t have one reliable place to go to where they could find information about the fundamentals of any blockchain project. So they decided to build it themselves!
An impression of the Blockdata office at the Herengracht:
If you look very closely, you see the Steem logo next to the Status logo on the big screen ;-)
Different types of information
In order to bring a valuable service to to blockchain space, Blockdata provides two levels of information about projects: basic and advanced. The basic information includes things like: general company information, simple token information, the team, key goals, funding information and key objectives. The end goal is to have the basic information available for as many projects as possible.
The advanced information goes deeper. To me personally this is where the magic happens. This information includes stuff like: technical and business roadmaps, token features, blockchain information and more. Since this type of data requires a lot of double-checks and usually is more time-sensitive, Blockdata aims to have advanced information about at least the top 150 projects.
One of the questions I asked the guys is how they will tackle the problem of time-sensitive information. They mentioned that in the future will timestamp all different types of data so users know when the data was updated. To me this is crucial since it tackles a real problem in the space.
So as you can see, these guys are focused on the fundamentals of projects, not price or TA (technical analysis). Also good to know is that they don’t focus on ICO’s or early stage projects, but on projects that are around for a while and are past the ICO stage.
Some practical pieces of information
- The guys expect Blockdata to be open to the public 1st of June at the latest. This means we can all take a look at the data by then.
- At the start they expect to have basic information available for about 200 projects and advanced information for about 25 of those.
- Access to the data will be free! In the future they will only ask money to companies that want to consume data through their API or that want to use their advanced model.
Want to help these guys with their mission?
Fill in the short survey! :-) Currently Blockdata is looking for people in the space who can help them better understand how they currently research blockchain companies and tokens. They are also interested in alpha users who can give us critical feedback and comment on data quality.
Personally I took some time to fill in the form they have on their website to collect this feedback. It took me about 8 minutes and they would very grateful if you could share your thoughts too. Oh, and maybe they will include some of the types of information you are looking for as well in their service! It is highly appreciated :-)
So what do you think? To what extent do we need something like this in the space? What kind of data would make it valuable to you as a regular reference?

Always nice to read about blockchain projects in the Netherlands. Seems like we're pretty 'into' crypto, despite no major projects originating here. With KPN hosting a NEO node, and ElaadNL creating the first IOTA carcharger in Wageningen, and that's just the tip.
Maybe we can steal some of the thunder away from silicon valley this way

We might be able to indeed! Would be very cool :-)
P.S. Don't forget to fill in the form. I know you always do your research thoroughly, so your input would definitely help them!

Great info. I look forward to the launch of this. A single place with this kind of info will be very useful!

Me too. It has a lot of value to have all information at 1 place, especially the reliable unstructured information :-)

Great read...
These guys are working on a possible fix for what imho still is a pothole in the crypto road...
Will go and contact them to pitch the ideas I explained to you via PM (and maybe drop them here later too) :).
Ps Please correct typo: website = https://www.blockdata.tech (with www)
