‘Token’, the mobile messaging application built on Ethereum blockchain, launched by Coinbase has been renamed as ‘Toshi’. Token Toshi, inspired by ‘WeChat’ was originally intorduced on April 18, 2017. They organized a week-long of hackathon named 'The Token Hackathon' early this month.
Brian Armstrong, the CEO and Co-founder @Coinbase announced that ‘Token’ will be renamed as ‘Toshi’ in his post “Goodbye Token; Hello Toshi” on June 23 2017.He informed that the name Token is somewhat confusing in conversation, with so many new tokens being created each week. Also, the Token trademark was already in use, at least five other digital currency or payment related entities using the Token name in various places around the world (Europe, China, etc). So, it would be best to change it, especially while the project is still so new.
Toshi was the runner up name that they were previously going to use for the project. Toshi had the best qualities of the bunch based on a number of criteria. The name is also an homage to Satoshi Nakamoto, the creator(s) of the first digital currency (which has now spawned an entire industry). Perfect to build their brand around.
Further, everything is being transition to new name ‘Toshi’. A new website and logo along with updates in their applications in the Google Play and Apple App Stores will be done over the coming weeks.
Goodbye Token; say hello to Toshi !
