It is usual to talk about blockchain mostly in the context of financial technologies, cryptocurrencies and international money transfers. But it can be applied in other areas that have even higher priority for the population. One of these areas is healthcare. But it is important to note that before embarking on the integration, you need to take into account that the network must be private, with access only a limited number of people to it - doctors, patients, and perhaps representatives of pharmaceutical companies. This can be achieved if only work computers of doctors, which are located directly in their offices will be used as nodes - validators.
And now, shortly about why it still makes sense to implement blockchain in the healthcare system:
- Transparency. Changes to the patient record to prescribe additional non-prescribed drugs will become an impossible task due to the principle of immutability. And the patients themselves will be aware of what information about them will reach the representatives of pharmaceutical companies since the exchange of information will be optimized.
- Immutability. Everything is extremely simple here - the practice in which drugs could be removed from the database for further using outside the medical institution will become simply impracticable since it will actually be impossible to delete old records from the data set.
- Medical supplies. Doctors, pharmacists and management will have all the information about the location, movement and use of each of all drugs from their medical facility. This, in turn, will significantly reduce the percentage of “lost” medicines.
Implementing blockchain in hospitals and clinics can be a great step forward, but at the same time, given the costs that could go to changing the existing structure, many healthcare representatives may simply disagree to do it.
