Today in the world there is such a situation that about 60% of all the goods that we consume are produced by small farmers and about 90% are transported by independent carriers. As consumers from developed countries demand an increase in production throughout the year, more food is imported from developing countries. Consumers pay a higher price, but this does not mean that farmers and truckers earn more money. Farmers sell products to various firms, these firms, in turn, further down the chain to other firms, then everything is delivered to warehouses, from the warehouse already in retail. And as a result, bypassing 5 or 6 intermediaries between farmers and consumers, the price becomes very high. These problems will be solved by eHarvestHub. The project will make food cheaper and affordable for everyone.
The eHarvestHub platform, based on the Blockchain technology, where the equal playing field would be small farmers and independent truckers. It will help small farmers and truck drivers earn more money, while our food becomes less expensive, and waste is minimized. The immediate goal for eHarvestHub is to help small farmers and carriers to get more profit, and food would become more affordable and cheaper. This can be implemented in the eHarvestHub Market, supported by Blockchain technology and smart-contracts, which remove additional levels of intermediaries and the need for people to participate in food safety audits. Thanks to Blockchain technology, the entire chain becomes decentralized and the consumer in real time can gain direct access to the market, production, profitability.
Problems of small farmers:
— Small farmers produce 60 to 80 percent of food that feed us, they do not produce enough volume on their own to meet the needs of sellers. For this reason, sellers go to distributors, forcing them to pay higher prices.
— Marketing capital. With a low rate of profit, they can not sell and have more buyers.
— There is no direct access to truckers who are available to deliver products and are more likely to work with someone who constantly provides cargo.
— Fragmented technology. Most of the technologies available to farmers are fragmented. This fragmentation is caused by typical business models using technology companies, with a high level of licensing.
— Transparency of food security. Consumers and regulators want to know what is happening with fresh produce, from the preparation of land for planting, and until it reaches the consumer.
These shortcomings force farmers to sell their product to middlemen for little money. As the product moves through the supply chain, each intermediary charges a fee, and the price increases, leaving consumers a higher price for fresh produce and little transparency. The current structure of the supply chain prevents more efficient operation of truckers and an increase in the amount of money.
— Always on the road. A constant stay on the road means that there is no time to directly offer ourselves to shippers.
— Exclusive contracts. Drivers often sign exclusive contracts with brokers that do not allow them to directly hire shippers.
— If the broker finds an even cheaper carrier, he will cancel the previous truck and send a new carrier. The search for a cheaper carrier by a broker may result in the delivery time being changed.
— Deferred payment. Sometimes payment can take up to 30 days after the delivery is completed. If the carrier wants to receive money earlier, the broker will charge for the already agreed rate, further reducing the profit for the trucker.
— Delayed deliveries. There are many reasons why delivery can be postponed. This is the broker and the shipper. Carriers can arrive on time, but the product is no longer the first freshness.
Problems faced by farmers and truckers due to intermediaries in the supply chain can be overcome with the eHarvestHub platform. Farmers and truckers can again return to managing their business and the future of the family.
