Faceboob Rats Jumping Ship... (Amid Warnings of Social Upheaval...)

When the former presiedent of faceboob says, "We knew what we were doing, but we did it anyway..." and another formerly responsible for growing the network says he won't use social media for the damaging affects it brings with, well then it's time to take a break, allow a shift, or maybe simply run like hell...

I watched a video on YouTurd this morning, showing several clips from recent interviews with Chamath Palihapitiya, former faceboob exec... He makes so many great points, I had to drop everything and offer it for people here... Because what he says is 10,000% relevant to us here on steemit... When the farceboob execs are jumping ship, you know it's sinking!

Here is the video... Pay attention to when he talks about how they manipulate mass populations using psychology and dopamine rewards... Each upvote on the blockchain is a reward mechanism to keep you coming back for more... They know it... Not saying we should stop steeming, but let's make great efforts to never allow steemit to get as stupid as faceboot...

The video talks about our general attention span being drastically cut short, our ability to solve human relation issues gone, and that if we don't break free now we are really gonna be screwed later... I am summing it up, but these are folks more credible than myself... Watch the video, you'll see what I mean...

Let's talk about this... I found social media tools to be useful, over the last 7 years... However, I have always had strict and consistent protocols which I put on myself, like never paying to 'boost' my stuff, only speaking truth with kindness, and avoiding spamminess whenever possible... It has worked well for me, and yay a few people in the pond like me... My reward was a bit of connection that helped keep me sane... Yet I can only imagine a younger person who has never known quality human contact, to go without google must seem like going blind!

Are we getting stupid? Were we all along? Is playing online making the world nicer? Online means burning fuels to generate electricity, so it isn't without its toll on the environment... Feedback loops with trigger words like Share, Like, Resteem, mean that before too long those definitions become more meaningful than the initial purpose... To me, liking something is too prefer it, and to be like something is to be similar... These days, my brain is so untrusting of these redefinitions, I tend to toss out Like meaning fondness... If anything I go the other way, joking how we should change the world currency to Likes... (If we did, the world would become an online sweatshop...)

The moral to the story is Faceboob BAD, feedback loops BAD... (steemit blockchain a little better!)
