According to the results of a recent survey, 59% of average financial services consumers have never heard about blockchain technology and know nothing about it.

According to the survey conducted by the British branch of HSBC, 59% of consumers know nothing about the existence of blockchain technology; moreover, 80% of those who heard about it said they don’t understand what it actually is.

The survey was conducted in March-April 2017 in order to identify what users know and how they understand financial technologies. 2000 British residents and 1000 people from Canada, China, France, Germany, Hong Kong, India, Mexico, Singapore, the United Arab Emirates and the United States took part in the survey.

The results of the study are not particularly surprising, taking into account the complex nature of technology, which operates mathematical abstractions. Meanwhile, according to Google Trends, browser users have become more interested in this new phenomenon, as the activity of searches for keywords bitcoin, etherium and blockchain has grown significantly in recent months, but “blockchain” is still less popular than two other favorites.
