Part 1
I think I originally heard of Bitcoin in late 2013. I didn't give it much attention as I thought it would never go anywhere and did not understand the technology at all.
Fast forward to May 2017, A colleague and coworker at the office started talking about Bitcoin and the technology behind the blockchain. This is where I started to grasp the concept of the code and ledger. As I explored and realized Bitcoin could only be mined by expensive ASIC Miners. My exploration eventually lead me to Ethereum. I was instantly fascinated by the concept that I could mine Ethereum. I ran and perused the numbers on Cryptocompare vehemently. I was fascinated!
I had never built a computer before, let alone work very long on Linux so I started watching YouTube videos to see how they are built. One program that kept popping up was Ethos. I really liked that ethos was very plug and play. I diverged myself over the weekend and on sunday night I texted my friend and colleague Jimbo and said “I am going to do it!”. We immediately started searching for graphics cards, all the videos and forums told us the RX 470 or 480’s were preferable. RX 470 and 580’s were sold out everywhere! Eventually, I was led back to Best Buy and they had RX 570’s in stock for $189.99. I could only purchase 3 at once, I ordered 3 and then ordered 3 more in my wifes name. On Monday I ordered my 6 GPU bundle from Ethos and the power supply and riser cards from Amazon. It was just a waiting game from there.
My cards came by the weekend, but Ethos was backordered by the sudden interest in mining Ethereum. I spent that time learning watching videos, reading articles, learning the commands I would need. The following weekend my GPUShack Bundle came on a Thursday. I had already built a wood frame by myself (as well as one for my colleague). So I started to build a computer for the first time.
I soon learned that motherboards especially mine MSI Z170A did not like it when you add 6 GPU’s and are trying to get them to all work. The most I could get to work was 4! I started testing each riser card and each GPU individually and finally ran out of any variables from riser or GPU’s as they all worked individually. I went to Ethos Support Chat and was giving the steps to downloaded the newest Bios and started troubleshooting step by step. Eventually a gentlemen came on and gave me the settings he used on his MSI Z170A, Bam! I had 6 GPU’s up after 24 hours of working on the rig!
