Improving Scientific Publishing

in blockchain •  6 years ago  (edited)

My mother, the only one among all her siblings to have received higher education, had always had a special place for Science in her life. Known for being a stalwart ever since she was young, she went on to teach at the university, and is a revered personality in town. I have always looked up to her all my life, and have always dreamt of becoming like her – juggling home and work, art and science.

Of late, my mother's passion for science has suffered from a setback. Just like many other of her colleagues from the research community, she has been suffering from several issues – often not knowing who to blame – when it comes to publications. The disgraceful monetary model followed in the research industry today has left scientists and researchers discontent. Neither do they own publication rights, nor are they entitled to any rewards or recognition for their months of toil. Despite several measures being taken against the biased reviewing processes and increased costs of publication, there hadn't been any solid solution to the menace for long.

And then came Orvium.

What is Orvium?

Orvium, a blockchain-based application, is an initiative to eradicate negative business influences on the research industry and yield effective scientific publishing. By bringing together the best of Ethereum and Smart Contracts, decentralization and cloud computing, data analytics and front-line technology, Orvium has several outstanding features to solve the many issues of the biased research industry.

Why Orvium?

The creation and rapid spread of the internet brought with many a boon and bane. In every walk of life, be it interaction, education, entertainment, health or so on, the internet has served as a Pandora's box for continuous growth and unparalleled development. The scientific research industry, an important field in the evolution of every aspect of life today, could spread its wings for larger spans with the internet.

For researchers, getting an article of research published in the mainstream is no easy task. The entire process is divided into a number of sub-modules, the most important one being dissemination. In the recent times, many science enthusiasts have taken to open resource platforms for disseminating their work, suggesting an inevitable turning of tables. This is exactly where Orvium, the first blockchain-based decentralized and open source network for publications, comes into the picture.

The Orvium ecosystem, an exponent of the transparency and security offered by blockchain, comes in handy with a fully traceable, publicly accessible and trustworthy framework. Cost efficiency is just another bonus, along with accuracy and freedom.

What are its salient features?

  • An impressive large database to handle all manuscripts
  • Lesser publication and admittance charges
  • Decentralisation and integration of journals
  • Transparency in peer reviews, minimalizing bias
  • Eradication of plagiarism and freedom of subscription
  • A social platform for researchers with proper rewards and recognition
  • Absolutely no influence of the business market over the costs and pay for publications
  • An overall boost to researchers in particular, and science, in general

Orvium's Token Mechanism

After a user, from any corner of the globe, has created an account on the platform, Orvium follows a set of procedures for user-friendly authentication. Authors of publications might submit their work on the Orvium platform following the necessary steps, which would lead them to a stage where they can stake their publication for peer reviews using ORV tokens. This procedure frees the system from external market influences and biases. Reviewers can claim ORV tokens once their reviews are approved of. Besides, the token shall be put to use under all circumstances where the exchange of data isn't free, for journal management, science patronage, and data analysis.

Verdict

Orvium dwells on the very points its contemporaries are lagging behind in. It uses an effective market strategy of working to abolish the issues breeding currently in the research community – lowering publication costs, improving knowledge dissemination, better transparency, linking research with data analytics, zero delays and promoting recognition for scientists. With these features at hand, Orvium is ready to take over the world of scientific research and publications and is a great investment for anyone who can see through the prospect.
