Hot Humid Tuesday Onshore Flow Develops

Blocking This Weekend

Looking at the visible satellite picture latethis afternoon we are still dealing with lots of clouds but thin spots and brightening is developing slowly and that at least has taken temperatures back up a bit from the 50s to the lower 70s in some areas. We should see slow improvement continue into this evening. Then overnight with some low clouds and a remnant onshore flow some patchy fog might develop along coastal areas but no showers are forecast. Temperatures overnight will be in the 50s to lower 60s.

To the south on the radar some of the tropical rains from Subtropical Storm Alberto have pushed up into Southern Virginia. The northward progress of this rain will come to a halt shortly and while it is likely continue into Wednesday to our south it will not be able to move northward. Tuesday promises to be a hot and humid day with some sunshine. Temperatures will be in the 80s to near 90 and there could be some scattered showers and thunderstorms popping up inland.

A cold front passes and Wednesday begins an onshore flow which means cooler temperatures and clouds. Temperatures will be just into the 70s. Alberto's remnants will likely go to our west at least initially so no showers are forecast for Wednesday but some showers could be in the mix Thursday and Friday and possibly into the weekend.

Here we are going into June and the NAO is flashing a rather strong negative signal going into early next week. This accounts for the onshore flow and the big highs going to our north. It also explains why we continue to see volatility with the occasional very warm day followed by several days of clouds and winds off the ocean. This means more changes going forward and no signs of any prolonged periods of heat or humidity at this time.
