After we first announced Runkod we received a lot of questions. Today we would like to give you some more technical information about Runkod and answer some frequently asked questions.
How Runkod Works?
In essence Runkod is a file router between the internet and Gaia storage that handles visitor requests and serve files over gaia storage. When a request hits to Runkod it resolves relations and redirects it to the corresponding point in the related project.
While doing that uses some caching mechanism to serve files faster.
Basically Runkod uses Blockstack as a infrastructure platform (like amazon or digital ocean)
Runkod is live on Product Hunt. Come and join the discussion!
How Runkod is decentalised?
Runkod stores files on Blockstack's high performance decentralized storage Gaia.
Is it working on a blockchain?
Relatively. Blockstack keeps some records of Gaia storage on a blockchain.
Does it runs node apps?
Runkod runs only frontend code for now. But maybe in future.
What are limits? Storage? Bandwidth?
Sky is the limit. There are some theoric limits but we are pretty sure you won't be able to exceed them.
How does Runkod creates SSL certificates for my custom domain?
Runkod uses a customized version of letsencrypt client that we specially developed. Once you setup a project with custom domain Runkod creates a ssl certificate in seconds and renews it every 30 days.
Will Runkod free forever?
Base features that we have developed so far will be free forever. We are working on some paid features like git integration or collaborative development tools (CI/CD) that we will announce in middle term.
Why we like Steem community?
Because we have similar goals to decentralize web, Steem does best job to decentralized content discovery and reward system for users, while runkod will decentralize web hosting to help with adoption of these both technologies. If you like idea behind Runkod try it out, maybe we will increase synergy between technologies by offering you to host your decentralized blog on Runkod, regardless, we are happy to share news with you.

Do you plan to integrate with ENS and other alternative domain services?

Currently, runkod does not use any domain service, does it? It just uses the storage that the hosting user provides.

Yes, we have some plans on this area too, once we have done detailed analysis of potential solutions. We will let community know 😉

Thanks for question! Blockstack also working on name service, we will explore all options to further adoption of decentralized web, all our tools mean to help developers as well as average user to easily host their online materials.

@runkod I would say that there is no record of gaia storage on a blockchain. Currently there is only the blockstack id / owner address association stored on chain. I don't even see a lookup of a blockstack id in the code. Would runkod work also for anonymous users (i.e. without a public blockstack id, just an address)?

For now, it works only with users who has blockstack id to be able to map/route to correct files. Maybe in future, there will be options 🙂
