BlockTrades now offering Steem Power Delegations
Lending money is a necessary component of capital accumulation and innovation. That being said, I don't think that's really relevant in this particular instance. MinnowBooster is, for better or worse, a very popular service. I think BlockTrades following suit is not a negative thing. Moreover, the fact they actually do offer some oversight of how the delegations are used may be a positive thing. They've explicitly taken a stand against vote spamming, so that's a plus. Beyond that, the fact that you can lease delegations in crypto other than Steem is also a plus to consumers that want to use that kind of service.

It is huge barrier for new users to acquire/buy STEEM, powering up and build a strong profile to attract new readers for their contents. Very few people read or care about a new content from a new user even if it is good enough. The voting service help those new users to stay afloat and keep them involved (i.e. value edition to STEEM economy). @blocktrades service similar to @minnowbooster inspire those new users to borrow at low cost to uplift their contents and stay relevant.
There is an another school of thinking, if one bought a single BTC three months back for $2K, and sell now for $7K how much value he is creating (what he is contributing?) rather than speculating. Now think, how much work (good quality content creation) he should do to earn $5K equivalent of STEEM (5500 STEEM) in three months. I assume $5K worth of content (e.g. equivalent activity in steemit) is much more valuable than holding and speculating!
However, I agree that people can take advantages by spamming, selfvoting and garbage creation for the shake of gain. It will be extra burden for @spaminator, @steemcleaners, @cheetah. Therefore, @blocktrades should create their version of SPAM CLEANER or help financially those projects.
Finally, "data"/content is new gold. The goal of steemit is to create more valuable data (i.e. content). The delegation helps or inspires data creation, but system (bots, curators, community) have to ensure that data creates value.

I think your bold suggestion of supporting the spam fighters is the best suggestion!
I even made a post about it today.... though I was asking @ned to delegate SP to steemcleaners, spaminator and sherlockholmes
Really, every big investor should delegate a significant portion of their steem power to programs that keep the platform clean and un-spammy!! It is in their best interest. They lose NO steem, and they increase the likelihood of Steem hitting $10 or more some day!

I would go further and state that here in lies the potential for crappy stuff to receive prominence. I know that we all want to make money, but if we wanted to sacrifice quality for content, wouldn't we have remained on the decentralized sites? Just looking at a potential draw back.

To me it does not look like they are taking a stand against vote spamming. Where did you see that?
"While BlockTrades does not plan to directly oversee usage of the delegated Steem, we will investigate complaints of abuse by the community. " - How would we know the delegation came from blocktrades to report it? In the end it is just creating a larger burden for @spaminator, @steemcleaners, @cheetah etc.
"frequent upvoting of nearly contentless posts and/or plagiarism posts" - Would this include comments? I can comment all day long and upvote myself and it would be 100% original. I could hide those comments in all the spam on steemit no problem.
"BlockTrades does not consider it abuse to upvote your own posts as long as they consist of original material that can be argued to have some meaningful content (even if it’s just an original joke)."- That leaves a serious amount of wiggle room. I could be writing a book one word at a time.
So to sum it up, it appears blocktrades is streamlining the ability for people to game the system.
ps. " The fact that you can lease delegations in crypto other than Steem is also a plus to consumers that want to use that kind of service."
I somewhat agree but it also hurts Steem's volume which hurts the Steem price.

It's very easy to determine delegations and it's not challenge at all for organizations like steemcleaners to report back to delegators if the steem they delegate is abused.

You know what, your just taking advantage of steemits flaws and I should not hold that against you. You see an opportunity to make easy money so why wouldn't you. Just piss's me off because we both know this is gonna cause a shitload of drama. I stupidly still want steemit to succeed.

Transisto is telling you that the "flaw" as you describe it is a feature of steem, not steemit as you wrote in your post. He's just trying to point out that your wording may lead to confusion.
I have a lot of SP and still continue to acquire more Steem. I also want both Steem (and Steemit) to succeed. We just have a disagreement about the impact of this initiative. Time will tell which of us is correct, but it's very early to make strong claims, IMO.

Ah yes I see what you mean. But right now steem and steemit are tied at the hip. I realize we have busy.org, dtube, dsound etc but steemit is the primary driver and the reason many people have invested.
Fair enough it is too early to make as strong a claim as I did and to be honest I kind of sounded like a dick when your just doing your own thing so my bad for that :)
It is just the fact the service will be abused and it will also be very difficult to stop it. Ironically I will probably use the service myself because of the guaranteed ROI but so will every spam farm and bot army. It is the fact that you have steamlined the entire process which bothers me the most I guess.
Unlikely but would you consider having a reputation of 50 minimum as a precursor to delegate sp? It would at least prevent the most basic of spam accounts and still drive for better quality content.(New rule for me from now is don't point out possible flaws without a possible solution. I have a tendency to see the worst case scenario.)

Why would someone lease if not for personal gain?! It's impossible to make back your investment unless you constantly upvote yourself. Nobody is here to donate his hard earned money to have the power to upvote content he likes.

@emble there are a few minnows that do lease 500 or 1000SP just to give nice upvotes to others they support.
But you are probably right that people willing to spend $$ for 10,000-100,000 SP will be more self seaking... Interested in earning an ROI ....with great posts or shitposts, they won't care.

Delegation lease is something that I've considered many times!
I've never bought in because it's so expensive at this time.
I'm glad to see some competition and I'm hoping it will bring down the cost.
Your argument that it hurts steem volume and price is simply false.
In fact it allows people to actually make a ROI when they put money in without needing to self vote all day long.
Blocktrades is an excellent service. I recommend anyone to try it.
It's extremely fast and reliable. I would however suggest using it only for larger volume since the fees can be quite high when transferring small amounts.

HAHA thanks for that!
I agree with every word that @dan said.
It perfectly outlines the practice.
However, his argument is on the moral issues- not the economic ones.
The economic argument is that this is a predatory practice that, at best, manifest unnatural value that could potentially collapse on itself.
The other side of the coin shows that it does indeed create reward potential for multiple parties (depending on the contract arrangement).
@dan 's comment also invites the question of restricting a person's right on how they are allowed to use the stake they own. In a completely free world this would never be inhibited.
From an equitable perspective he is morally right.
In times like this I believe we have to trust that the market will decide the proper balance of fairness and equality.

Just curious...maybe I misunderstand. If you pay for SP that you dont keep. How can you earn an ROI UNLESS you self vote?

Sorry, I should have clarified a bit better.
It allows the people who have bought Steem to earn without self voting.
The people who lease SP usually use it to make money by selling votes with bots, or for normal purposes.
You can make good money this way, but it is shitty for the little people.

"Your argument that it hurts steem volume and price is simply false" . How so?
Less steem being traded = less steem being purchased = lower steem price.

Blocktrades accepting other currencies for this service actually should help the price of steem. If they chose to power down their steem and sell it the price would be negatively impacted. If they delegate for steem and then sell it to extract their profit then again you have downward pressure.

I had 10K SP.
I bought an additional 30K SP with bitcoin, for the express purpose of leasing out the voting power.
Do you think my doing this was bad for the price?

EDIT: my bad didn't notice the "with bitcoin" part. Yes I do think it is bad for the steem price. What value have you added to the market other than an intent to create more steem?

I don't create steem. I want some of the finite daily steem supply.
The ability to lease out my voting power is the only reason I bought the steempower.
As it stands I clearly should have left it in bitcoin at least a month longer.
When people buy an asset, the purchase increases the price of the asset, so my buying steempower made steem more valuable.

Ah I misunderstood. I thought you meant you leased the SP with bitcoin. That was my original point. Why would I think you powering up hurts the price?
Downvoting a post can decrease pending rewards and make it less visible. Common reasons:

Depends on whom you leased out to.
Let me explain it clearly. If you lease it to people who are negatively impacting the platform, you contribute to price loss. Why do you think whales use their own SP to downvote spam and low quality posts?
Cause if they didn't, then steem price would crush to 50 cents or even less.

Better platform and uses of the coins ==> increased demand even with less trading volume. Higher demand and those not wanting to sell = increased steem price.

By better platform I mean content producers can actually make some return on time/effort investment, which will draw more content producers. As it is now...business minded people aren't going to flock to the platform because, well....it's not looking like it's worth it (for a variety of reasons including
"Less steem being traded = less steem being purchased = lower steem price."
What I'm trying to say, said another way, is, more steem being purchased and fed to content producers creates a better platform and more users and more demand for steem.
Yes I can see that investing only to gain and then sell steem isn't great for the platform.
