Indra Jatra - the festival of God of rain in Nepal

in blog •  7 years ago

The festival of “God of rain” has already begun in Kathmandu city. We perform this Jatra to remember Lord Indra.

According to the myth, the mother of Lord Indra, Indrawati asked him to bring a special flower (Parijat) to worship a God. He went out to look for that special flower but couldn’t find anywhere in heaven. Then he came to earth (Kathmandu valley) in search of that special flower. Lord Indra was picking the flower from a garden then suddenly was captured by a farmer for stealing flowers from his garden. It was late and Lord Indra had still not returned home. His mother was worried and went out to search. She finally found her son but the farmer didn’t release her son. She couldn't do anything except to reveal that she was Goddess Indrwati. Lord Indra was imprisoned until his mother revealed her true identity and later his captor gladly released him. We celebrate to remember this incidence every year. It is celebrated for 8 days.

In this day a huge ceremonial pole is erected outside the Hanuman Dhoka (an ancient palace) in Kathmandu. The pole is usually thirty-six feet long and is chosen with great care from the specific place (from Nala forest in Kavre district). The pole is accompanied by the rare display of the Akash Bhairab and is represented by a massive mask spouting Nepali local liquors.

One of the persons in this Jatra plays the Lord Indra (as a captive) and tries to imitate the incidence. The temple of God with horrific face, the Seto (White) Bhairab is also opened and for the next three days.

Finally, the Kumari (the living goddess), who lives in seclusion away from the community in a temple, leaves the seclusion in a palanquin through the streets of Kathmandu to thank Lord Indra.

The procession of chariots and masked dancers who represent demons are the main attraction of this festival.
