Nifty or Thrifty: What Kind of a Mommy are you? - Part 3

in blog •  8 years ago  (edited)

Being a mom (of three, mind you) I tend to always find ways to save money while giving my family the best that I can.

Hence I learned the beauty that is called - DIY (Do it Yourself)

Earlier, I shared how I saved on my children's birthday parties by doing most if not all, of the preparations.

I also flaunted my hair-cutting skills here on this post.

Nifty or Thifty. What Kind of a Mommy are You? -Part 2

This time I would like to share some of the little projects I finished for my kiddos when I had my annual vacation late last year.

Being expats here in the UAE, we are given 30days of annual leave. My company gives us 25 working days (5 weeks) which we have to finish in a year or they get forfeited. So last November, I had the chance to stay at home and spend 3 straight weeks with my kids.

During these times, my "maternal instincts" grew deeper. My little ones - 2.5 years and 1 year old are in the stage when they are at the peak of learning. I have read somewhere that at this stage their brains are like sponges that will absorb anything and everything that you instill.

I felt I have to be responsible to that learning.

This was also the time when I somehow became more firm on our decision to homeschool. I wrote about them here:

I am a full time working mom. Will homeschooling work for us?

Having said these, I wanted to become productive during these lazy days and make something that my children can use to play and learn.

Disclaimer: I am no artist. Just a mom trying to save money. 😅

Presenting: My DIY Shape sorter

What I used:

  • an old shoe box
  • styrofoam
  • cutter
  • non-toxic paint, different colors
  • color pens, to design the box

What I did:

Using basic shapes in MS Word, I printed the shapes that I will use as templates. I made a square, rectangle, circle, oval and pentagon.

I then cut the styrofoam and used the paint to color each. Let dry.

I used these shapes to trace the patterns on the box - while cutting, I just made the holes a little bit bigger so that the styro shapes will be easier to put inside.

Viola! Shape Sorter ala-Mommy:

Partly for my own sanity, I also decided to make them a simple Busy Board:

This board was made mainly with recycled materials- junk and mess inside our house.

Before our old washing machine completely broke down, hubby @kennyroy tried to tink on it and removed this white piece of plastic from underneath. This has been laying idly in our bathroom for a long time and so when I had my vacation I remembered this piece of "junk" and decided to make it as the base of my busy board.

The red strings were actually handles of a paper bag - now turned into a great tool fine motor skills development. The idea is to weave them into the holes of the board.

We know how kids love to toggle on switches and meddle with electronics plugs and outlets. That is extremely dangerous and therefore a no-no!. We parents try to kid-proof our homes to avoid accidents. So I decided to give my little ones the pleasure of toggling and tinkering all they want - on the busy board.

I also found a pair of double locks (not sure how they are called actually) and just put them on the board using a glue gun.

Hubby has an old clutch bag with chain hooks, (again sorry if I cannot find the right term!) which were not being used. They ended up on the busy board as well.

Cannot be seen on the picture above, I attached an old onesie with buttons and clips to satisfy my little girl's love of buttons!

DIY Playdough

Kids love playdough. My kids are no exception. Even my eldest son loves it, and most of the time they are required to bring some in school for projects also. I also realized that playdough could be expensive and may be harmful for my youngest who tends to put anything in his mouth! So I thought, why not make my own playdough?!

Here's the recipe that I am using:

You need:

  • 2 cups plain flour (all purpose)
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 1/2 cup salt
  • 2 tablespoons cream of tartar
  • Up to 1.5 cups boiling water (adding in increments until it feels just right)
  • food colouring
  • few drops glycerine (optional- adds more shine!)
  • small plastic jars to keep the playdough

Method:

Mix the flour, salt, cream of tartar and oil in a large mixing bowl
Stir continuously until it becomes a sticky, combined dough
Add the glycerine (optional)
Allow it to cool down then take it out of the bowl and knead it vigorously for a couple of minutes until all of the stickiness has gone. * This is the most important part of the process, so keep at it until it’s the perfect consistency!* (If it remains a little sticky then add a touch more flour until just right)
Portion the playdough enough to fill your jars, add food colouring and knead again until the food coloring is evenly distributed.

The playdough, kept in an airtight container, can last up to 6 months.

There you have it, just few of my DIY projects! Stay tuned for more!

No matter what we do, as long as it is made with love and pure intentions the outcome would always be fulfilling.

As a mom, I may not be able to provide my kids with the most expensive and beautiful toys but I take pride that I have done such simple things for my children.

Thank you @hiroyamahishi! I try my best to give them not just material things but most especially the values that they will need when they would be grown ups.

Happy to be appreciated. 😊

Great ideas! Not just saving money, but as time goes on, you will be setting an example to them about thrift, creativity, resourcefulness and not needing expensive material possessions.

Thank you @kiwideb. Actually, that is what we are trying to instill in their young minds - material things need not be expensive. It takes a lot of work to get good money. They must work for what they want. Example, my son wants a "Nerf Gun", he has to know that he will not get it just because he says he wants it. He needs to earn it by, say, helping mommy wash the dishes or clean up the mess. We also started showing them the idea of saving money by having their own coin banks. Small steps, but hopefully would be a great deal later on in their lives.

That is such a gift you're giving them. So many young people seem to expect they will get whatever they want and life just isn't like that. Yes, sure we want to have the attitude that life is on our side, but we still need to contribute our bit of it.

Exactly. We want to teach our kids that life is not easy and though there are lots of good people around, there will still be times that they would have to rely on themselves alone.

Wow you are so resourceful and very crafty. But I get it when you are a parent of young kids you have to turn up your game to make sure you providing the best in engagement and education for them.

It looks like your kids are getting the very best thing they need. Your love and time.

Loving this!

Thanks for the kind words @sneakgeekz! I have been told once after marriage that our lives will turn upside down when we have kids already. True enough, it has been a roller coaster ride. But as you know, roller coaster rides can be frightening but kinda delightful also. :-)

Yes it is an adventure. For me along time ago, when I used to be a bad hombre my kids saved my life. I had to change my ways, step to the plate and do the right thing by them and me.

Its a bit complicated but my point is that the gifts from being a parent are the most incredibly invaluable experiences I have ever had.

Wow. Yes, true. There is a way that kids can deal with us that can really strike us in a different manner and would tend to change is forever.
I am happy for you, you found your sweet spot.

Yay! . . . another expat :) Awesome
I'm not a mother, but heard about 'busy boards' last year from one of my friends. I ran with that concept and put something together for my cat. She loves it.
Congrats on keeping those busy hands occupied!

Thanks @jannell! I saw your name earlier on my notifs and thought you share the same name with my cousin. Then your saw your dp and my jaw dropped coz you also look quite similar! 😁
(I really had to say that. Hehe)
Back to your comment- yeah, those busy boards are life saver. Kids can just spend a lot of their time on it. There are lots of other concepts like a "busy book" which I also contemplated on doing.but hey were too complicated and time consuming so I didnt try anymore. 😉

An awesome addition to the #steemmoms tag! Keep up the great work!

thanks @thatsweeneyguy. Will definitely keep those coming. 😉

I'll be writing the first curation post about SteemParents, and will definitely be mentioning you 😉

Wow, fantastic. Thank you! 😊

The homemade play dough reminds me of when I was a kid...my mom used to make it for us all of the time! I would say I can be a DIY mom when it comes to toys but I think generally my DIY skills are more suited to refinishing and renovating. DON'T ask me to decorate a birthday cake for you but I can make some awfully cute cookies! Great ideas and lots of fun memories. They will remember those things more than the commercial products.

Thanks @thesimplelife! Hopefully my kids will remember these little things too.
There was a time when my eldest was askes to bring playdough in school. He kept on telling his classmates and teacher that "those are made of food ingredients!" and his classmates were like, "really?! how do you make them?"
I like it that he felt it was "cool" being the only one who brought that kind of playdough. Haha

We had homemade Carebears and homemade Cabbage Patch dolls...oh and homemade Halloween costumes! Those are the things my siblings and I laugh and joke over now and remember the best. My mom always put flavored koolaid in the play dough mix so that it smelled good too! Ah the memories you are bringing back. Thanks for the trip down memory lane!

Wow, your mom is something! 😍 I have tried the DIY costumes also. I still have to create a separate post about that. 😆
Now I am more encouraged to work on more stuffs for my kiddos, thank you too!

You're welcome! Can't wait to see how your projects turn out. May have to snag some ideas and try them out myself! Thank goodness for Pinterest!

Haha, what will we do without pinterest?!

I'm an addict for sure! The answer to the question " Where'd you get that idea/recipe?" is always Pinterest!

Nice one @arrliinn

Haha! Thanks @crisgojar. Need to improvise to save. 😉

Wow nice article

Thank you @elizahfhaye

Cool stuff @arrliinn! You're basically a magician (and most probably, this is how your kids view you too!)

Love all what you did here, specially the busy box (who cares what those stuff are actually called. They're stuffs. Period. Lol). Quite inventive of you to use things lying around, and for the great purpose of learning for that matter!

I'll probably try making playdoughs too, as my son is ABSOLUTELY CRAZY about this.

Thanks for what you do, and for sharing too! :)

Yay, thanks @dreamiely! I guess as moms we tend to evolve into a more ingenious or resourceful person. We have to be able to provide without over-indulging, that's what I think.

I'm actually guilty with the over-indulgence part I think, since I only have this one little ahm... angel(?) to cherish. Need to work on that.

Nothing wrong with that, like I said we do it out of love. But sometimes I just come to realize that most of these toys or clothes will just be left untouched eventually. So why spend too much? 😆

I love how you repurpose and use household items for your crafts. I am a mom of three adults now and I'm so thankful we all survived! LOL There was a brief moment in time that I thought about homeschooling but realized if I didn't get a break from my kids then I'd probably go ballistic or completely insane.
I still manage to keep a tight budget even though I've only got one son left in the nest. He's 22 now and is high functioning Asperger's but we manage to keep to our corners and get along. He also knows the value of a budget and repurposing items. :)

My kids drive me insane most of the time too. Then I will have a moment of realisation that "hey, they are growing up so fast." Not long from now and they will want their own independence so I try as best as I can to show them all the love while their worlds still revolve around mommy.
Though I struggle sometimes, I would like to see the positive side in everything so it would not eat me up and I can have the will to continue. 😊

When my boys were grown up enough, the pulled me aside and said, "Ma, we're turning into men now and we want to live with dad now." Well that nearly ripped out my heart but we had good conversations about it and in the end, it was not my place to hold them back. They had valid reasons and made a grown up decision. It was hard. But now that they're grown they can come to me about anything. That makes me feel good.

I always tell my son that soon he will find another girl who he will love and then he will leave mommy and make his own family. He says no, that won't happen. But I know it will and my heart is already bleeding. 😅
I can't imagine how you felt when they moved out. But then again that is the purpose of us getting our arses to work- to prepare them for that. (Although we ourselves will never be ready, sigh).

From one mom to another - I really appreciate authentic posts like this and I look forward to seeing more of your submissions in the future. I think you’d really enjoy a recent post of mine... https://steemit.com/life/@sweetpea/adventures-of-a-tantruming-two-year-old

Thank you @sweetpea! I tend to write about my experiences as a parent because there I know what to talk about and I am proud to say that these were written from the heart.
I will make sure to visit your post and follow.
See you around! 😉

I just can't get how do you find so much energy, but I guess the source is called Love :)

Nice DYI projects..I never did something like that.. Thank you for the inspiration

Yes. I should say that these are all labor of love. That time when I spent my 3 weeks vacation from work, I felt that I should do something to become more involved with my children. It even occured to me that I wanted to become a stay at home mom. Having been working for the past 17 years I dont know if I would really like the idea of staying at home. But yeah, when it passed through my mind, so thay must be maternal instinct + love. Although financially, it is not possible as yet. 😉

See your post mentioned here

My honor!
😍
First times are really sweet! (feeling giddy! )

This is great @arrliinn! I have made playdough for my daughter too....when she was 2 or 3. It is great you save money by making your own projects :)

Thanks @sgnsteems! Playdough most of the time go to waste immediately when kids mix the different colors together. By making them kiddos can have as much without spending a lot of money. 😉

Plus when they get older, they can help you in the process of making it. My daughter now wants to make silly putty and is looking at different ways of making it :)

True. We kind of encourage their creativity and resourcefulness when they see what we do. 😊
