A Day Of Collecting Wood. Upcycling Pallets.

in blog •  6 years ago

If you have read some of my past posts you will know that I am into recycling items, either to make something new or I pop them in the right order for the recycling man.

I have made quite a few projects from different things, like turning plastic bottles into fairy garden ornaments, and pallet wood into planters and fences.

After building a fence to split my garden in half I decided that the whole garden needed doing in the same style as it looked really good.

The problem I had is money, and wood isn't cheap at our lumber yards any more.

I went out to get some more pallets but for the size of my garden I would probably need to bring home somewhere in the range of 50 to 60 pallets to do the whole garden.

My neighbour and I went to a laser cutting factory just on an off chance that they had some pallets laying around.

They did, and they were huge, The longest pallets I have ever seen anyway. these needed to be picked up in a lorry or a long wheel base van.

This didn't stop us though, and with a cheeky smile and a little chat with some of the staff they agreed to let us take the pallets away.

I have a 7 seater car, it is got to be the biggest pile of spanners on the road at the minute, but it is good for somethings, with the seats down me and my wife can lay in the back and sleep if we wanted too.

We dropped the seats and went to work taking the pallets apart to get them in the car, the problem was they were still to long and we had to think of something to get them back.

One idea was to chop them but that would mean we would have smaller than we wanted pieces of wood, so the only other option we had was to push them through the window and hope that the police didn't see us on the way home with them.

3 journeys we did taking pallets to our house from this factory, we looked like fred flintstone and barney rubble.

The car was that full I couldn't see out of my mirrors and I had to rely on my mate to look for me as we drove the wood home.

In the space of 4 hours my back garden looks like a lumbers yard.

The wood we have collected is good stuff, some are even fence posts 4x4s and are about 7 foot in height.

My wife came out to see what we had been doing, her face was a picture, "has a forest upset you or something?" were her words.

It was great fun and I have loads of projects lined up for the wood too, Like making decking for the garden, making planters and even a bench I have instore for this wood.

It is all fun and games and I am going to keep it all documented here on the steem blockchain.

Keep your fingers crossed for me that my carpentry skills is good enough to pull this off because I just don't know if my skill set will let me do what I have planned .
