I have never heard of a driver getting the sack before, normally this industry that I work in is the easiest place to work and it has a high turnover of staff normally from a driver just not turning up anymore.
Tonight I was working with a new driver, he isn't english and has only been in our country 5 years, his english word is pretty good and he has been giving me a run for my money and I have had to up my game over the last few days to get more deliveries in than him.
Tonight wasn't busy and with two drivers seemed a little boring for my liking but I have to work to bring the money in.
We both went out with two deliveries each and I came back to the shop and picked another 2 up, I then went back and picked another two up thinking that the other driver was as busy as me.
After about an hour I went into the shop and to collect another delivery and the big boss man seemed stressed.
I asked him what was wrong and he told me that the other driver had gone out on a delivery an hour ago and had not returned.
I was a little worried so I took his two address he had gone too and went out looking for him as who knows what could have happened, but he was nowhere.
The boss man had been trying to phone him but he wasn't picking up and this was a little strange, I had to keep going and keep delivering otherwise there would be some pretty pissed off customers.
After 2 hours the driver phoned the shop, it had turned out that he was calling from a service station on the motorway.
What the f*ck was he doing all the way on the motorway you might ask?
Well he put the address into the sat nav and it gave him the directions to an address down in london, he couldn't answer the phone as he was using it as a sat nav so no one could get through to him.
The driver never thought to himself that he was going well over the 6 mile radius of the shop and just kept driving.
The order that he had on him had been cancelled by Justeat as the customer had waited for so long.
At 11.55pm the driver came back to the shop, he had his head low and looked like a school boy who had been told not to chase the girls.
My boss took him to one side and sacked him, paid him for the shift and told him that this had made him lose a customer, not only that but other customers food had been late as there was only one driver.
I felt sorry for the guy because there is no way that his wage would have covered the amount he must have spent on driving down south.
What an error
