My Mom Doesn't Like Steemit.

in blog •  7 years ago

I'm super hyped I found this site but my mother has second opinions. Could she be right? After spending hours trying to convince her why Steem, Steem Power, Steem Dollars and Steemit were the coolest things to hit planet Earth, she made one very convincing point I'm having a hard time arguing with. See, although Steemit might be cool because it spits out Steem every time you post or vote, my mother, who is 67, simply said, "I made all my money. I don't need Steem. I want to be entertained. So far, I can't find anything good on Steemit that's entertaining." And she's right. Perhaps if you are into cryptocurrencies and the whole Haejin/BernieSanders thing, this place is for you. But my mom just likes random, crazy, entertaining content. She loves Facebook for this. It's then I realized why Steemit is not actually the replacement for Facebook I was hoping for. Because most people on here are so caught up in trying to gain money/votes, they're afraid to post something that won't get money. That leads to boring, predictable content, most of which is plagiarized from youtube. Could Steemit be on a one way path to the content garbage chute? Let me know your opinions. I need to know Steemit is a place that will appreciate the work I wish to bring here, and not just try to get in on the curation votes.

It's all in the timing...

It's a community in the making which will shift focus one way or another towards something else. Now it's all about cryptocurrency but maybe soon it'll be about funny things or even memes or whatever.

At first it's always a hype but that will die down once people understand this is just like any other (social)content website. People will focus on what the community likes and as of right now, nobody knows what most of us Steemit users like... except we all like cryptocurrencies.

With Facebook it was first all about getting as many 'friends' as possible. before it becoming something worth while. With Twitter it's all about the most retweets and/or followers. With Reddit it's about the 'karma'. Some people will stay in this and only focus on that, others are just there for the community as a whole. The latter one is the one you need and that needs growing and being out there as a whole, a group.

I'm certain Steemit will grow into that, but it needs time, it needs entrepreneurs that understand what makes a community... well a community. It needs people that are original and only care about making others laugh, cry, interested or anything else. Those people are here and there are many more on the way. Steemit needs 'leaders' in this and maybe isn't yet ready for the 'followers' that only consume.

If you want to know if Steemit is a place for your content. Just let it be a place for your content and be one of those 'leaders' instead of a 'follower' and shape Steemit to what you think is best. People will come and go as the community will take form and other websites will spawn from nowhere as another community needs a home.

The community shapes the websites, it's not the other way around. Keep that in mind.

Your thoughtful comment has renewed my faith in Steemit!

There are many other programs running on the STEEM blockchain... Zappl... Dmania... Dtube...

Hmmm. How do you access these? Are there crazy ufo/angel/prediction videos my mom can smoke pot to?

Lmao.. I don't know if there are UFO videos or not.. but if she's smoking the right weed watching paint dry can be fun... check out Dmania first...

ok, i'm on dtube right now, thanks!

I think it largely depends on what content you're putting out, and how well you're networking within the community. For some, it's going to be insta-followers and $$, solely because they've already put a lot of work in to gain followers on different platforms. You've been here for, what, a week? And you've said it's thus far brought more traffic to your website than Facebook ever has. Okay, first major success. More traffic to your website.

Give it time. If it came so easily, I would almost venture to say that it wouldn't have the same value. Post for the pleasure of it, post to uplift the community. Then, don't worry about it.

I'm a newb though, so what do I know :p

ha ha, yeah. But don't take that last sentence too literally. It's not my sentiment, just a thought. I think Steemit is it. But I'm starting to see why more haven't crossed over yet. And I'm beginning to see some of the imperfections and struggles steemit is facing.
