We had to run to town today and get some stuff we needed, a belt for the tiller and some plumbing stuff to finish up the bathroom in the small house. Our first stop was Lowes, I always have to go to the garden area to see if there is something I need, or just really want, there was nothing that I had to have today. So on to the plumbing, I needed a riser to put in the shower because there is not a wall on the faucet side of the tub in the small house. We were going to use a riser and add the things we wanted to it.
We asked an associate close to by if they had any and where would they be as we did not find any. Thought maybe we looked in the wrong place as sometimes things are not where you expect them to be. She told us she had no idea and she would get someone that knew what we were looking for to help us. The guy that normally works over there was off today so it was going to be a crap shoot on who was helping us find it.
The lady come by and asked if we were the ones looking for a shower riser, my wife said we were and my wife went to look at them with her as I was getting some fittings I needed. I found them in the aisle with the galvanized pipe. My wife said it would be chrome and it was 1/2 inch pipe. The girl said this is what is used for showers unless you wanted PVC. My wife asked her if she knew what a shower riser was, she said not sure but this is what is used most of the time. My wife asked her if she knew what a claw foot tub was and she said: "Yes, but you cannot but a shower on a claw foot tub". My wife just told her thanks and we went on our way. At that point, we knew that she had no idea so we would come back later.

We left and went to tractor supply to get a belt for the tiller and as I had bought it at TSC they should have the belts required to replace the old one. Come to find out they quit selling the CountyLine tillers shortly after we bought ours. I told the girl it was a tiller 5 times and she is still looking lawnmower belts, to say the least, that was a lost cause too.
I am in awe that the store would put someone in a department that knew nothing about that the skill of the department they are working in. I see this time and time again in the big box stores. Employees without a clue, I knew why that is and it is because if you have a skill and work that skill you expect to be paid a decent wage. The problem is that the big box store does not want to pay someone that can help customers with their projects above 8 or so dollars an hour. They do not want to invest in a person that brings knowledge with them to work.

We do not have any small stores anymore because the big box stores have run them out and they cannot afford to operate and run a business anymore. So we are stuck with young people that have no knowledge trying to sell a customer something that he or she may not really need or is not right for their project. People are trying to become more self-reliant and do things for themselves and it is hard when they are blocked either way they go.
Thanks for reading our blog. Have a great night/day, whatever it is in your neck of the woods.

One time we went to Lowes, it was around 7-8pm at night.we hadn't had a not so good experience. The associate was not helpful on the Lumber section. I guess ,everybody wants to go home on time. Left us waiting for a long time until another sales associate appeared.

They do that all the time, it was close to closing and he wanted to go home. There is no work ethic anymore it seems.

This is the problem everywhere. When big box stores stinglily decide to employ workers who have no idea of what they are marketing or dealing with because they want to save more and spend less. The problem always falls back on the costumer. You will explain your life outta you.And I can't even blame the employees, because there are several experienced unemployed people that are denied the opportunity because no one is willing to pay them well.

Most of the employees are just trying to make a living and no blame there. There should be some training available to the employees so they could learn to help customers better.

I’ve actually showered in a tub with a shower riser once, otherwise I probably wouldn’t have known what it was either!

When you go to a home improvement store, the employees in that department should know what something is when you ask for it. Maybe some training should be implemented.

It's not just the box stores. I'm a water plant operator and am amazed when we have salesmen come by that have no clue what a water plant does. They may know how to take an order if you have researched it out and know what you need, but help? nope not gonna happen

I think I know which salesman gets the most orders. LOL. I go to Lowes enough that the people I normally deal with will find me and walk up and say "Hello" when I walk into the store if they see me. I have a person that is at the Pro Desk will find me and stop and talk to us and ask us how it is going and if we need something. Not having a truck we have to have lots of stuff delivered because we can not haul it home.

There too? My goodness it's everywhere especially if your not average. You can tell by the look on their face it's a lost case. haha. And if you asked for two things they get totally confused and you have to ask a next time.

You ask them and they get that look on their face of total panic because they are not sure of what it is. Then they ask what is that for and you know it is over then.

Now that I am fixing my house and ask for (in their eyes) impossible things because of my unusual ideas, but it's just old school.

My wife has some unusual ideas but they work, so keep thinking out of the box. LOL.

I can’t stand Lowe’s, they are useless! The layout for stocking the shelf’s is atrocious!
Homedepot is better, up here most of the people know what they are talking about. They actually can and do help.
We have True Value, and Spenard Builder Supply for the smaller stores.

I have noticed that also. We went in for a dryer vent and they are in the plumbing. Go Figure! Home Depot is not much better here. I use Lowes because unlike HomeDepot I get a Military discount on everything I buy, with Home Depot they only discount what they want to in the store.

I don't know if it is the same in the US, but in the UK so many stores are going down now as online shopping takes over.
Stores really have to up their game and offer top rate knowledgeable service through well trained assistants else they will lose out to online shops that will always have a bigger range and cheaper prices.

Lowes wants you to shop online but I dod not like waiting a week to get something. They are really slow with shipping. I do not see how this Lowes here stays open. They are never really busy, they can handle most people with only one checkout open and hardly any waiting.

Is Lowes like a general hardware store? We don't them in the UK.
I guess Amazon sets the standard for delivery times - usually 1 - 2 days in the UK. It sounds like Lowes might have to up their game.
