A moment, that's how long a story can be made. And that's all it takes.
Somehow I never thought I would be here: living on my own, getting my first paying job, and support filled with friends and family. But there is more then meets the eye because it didn't start out that way.
There was a time where I didn't know who I was or what I wanted to do with my life. There was a time when I was depressed lost in a world trying to escape. Yet here I was taking classes at a community college not really fitting in. Struggling to make new friends. Even slowly struggling in my classes as well. I didn't know why nor my parents. But it wasn't until I left Naperville that everything began to change. It was that move that led to my decision to abandon the education and college. A change needed to happen. A change for something better.
After moving back to Wilmette, my struggles in community college continued. It was during this, a discover was made when my parents took me in to be evaluated. I discover that I have Autism of the high functioning variety as well as small list of other things that I wouldn't know where to begin to describe to you all. This discovery opened a door and began a path that will take me closer to myself. My true self.
It was little after that, I failed out of community college. I know this isn't something one shouldn't admit but the failure was a blessing. It was then I decided that path of college and education wasn't for me. My calling was out there. There was a bit of time where I wasn't sure what I was going with myself until my mom found Our Place. Our Place is a day program for adults with disabilities to give them meaningful and productive lives.
To be honest, I was initially hesitant to go because I wasn't sure if it was the right place for me. Eventually I went and today I don't have a single regret about it. Through Our Place I made new friends and a family. A place where I fit in. I also got a paying job I like doing. Though it has stopped for now, I believe it is destined for a comeback. Currently, I go to Our Place 4 days a week, 6 hours a day. What I found was a true special place with amazing people that have truly touched my heart. From the staff, volunteers, and participants this place is a wonder all on it's own.
Now looking back, it's funny how some things in life work out. Like, how a failure can be a blessing. How it opened a door to something greater.
But before I wrap this up, tie it up with a bow I would to give you a little inspiration message. If you try and fail. Take it as blessing to try something new or find a new path. Cause you never know the power and a gift failure can give you.
I also want to say thank you for everyone in my life for being in my life. Without you all I wouldn't be the person I am today. You all are a blessing, truly unique individual souls. So thank you and have a wonderful day!! It’s time to spread more into this world :-)
