Are me and steemit relevant to each other? Early concerns....

in blog •  6 years ago

Before i came to steemit, i was warned..

"Oh its just full of crytpo nerds and millenials and they really wont be interested in someone who has acheived freedom and is the age of their mum"

Obviously that is a huge generalisation but I have a feeling it may have some truth to it...

My #introducemyself responses was interesting especially views to conversion into comments and votes...disappointing...now that is about content and content relevancy to the reader.....

First impressions they say count......
And although only 24 hours in......there are some things are occuring to me and i will have to take on board.

It seems that Unless you find your people and community steemit wont work. The measure of success is connection.

And so far the only way i know of finding likeminded people is through tags...
Are there others way of finding your people on steemit?
Because i've just spent several hours i can never get back reading blogs and comments of no relevance to me even though in a tag area i am interested in

Steemit is not simple. There is alot of technical prowess required to be "successful" and you may have good content but without the tech stuff you may never be noticed. Theres alot of jargon and steemspeak.
I have to overcome technical bullshit on every online mode I encounter, so do i want to spend even more of my beautiful hours when I am already in a huge learning curve with creating a website, facebook business page, instagram etc...writing content for a book...
If the goal here is cryptocurrency then i can just go and buy some surely with money I earn from other online sources potentially creating me income?

I still have many many questions about crypto and i am in on faith for the future but in the present with so very few outlets to use crypto to purchase stuff, that unless you convert it into fiat cash, its value is conceptual....??? Very confused....not gonna let my confusion stop me being a tiny part if it or advocating it....but seriously....its bloody confusing

Already also ive noticed trollish behaviour, fretish slightly narky conversations and feel people are often commenting and connecting just for the vote not for geniune connection.....

Hmmmmmm....alot to consider...i think im gonna go with the flow and limit how much time i dedicate to steemit. Ill write what i want, how i want and most important find my people as this is about connection, genuine connection
And if anyone has any advice about how i can go about finding my people so i can follow connect and upvote from a place of #authenticity i would be so very very grateful...

Sort Order:

I'm totally with you - it's so, so confusing to understand the odd thing that you have to keep posting things even if almost nobody sees it and that your posts will not be seen until you have more reputation. But you only gain reputation through upvotes from other people who don't see you 🤔. You only turn in circles when you think about it 😉. And that's the point when a lot of people give up.
But you have to invest time and read posts from other people and comment a lot to get noticed....Now we are at the point "where to find interesting stuff from my interest?" ..yes with tags ...or scrolling..scrolling...scrolling....
or you can enter keywords in the search field.
Then there is the opportunity to look for steemit theme groups in the discord chat and to get involved there in order to get to know people.
Let's talk about upvotes. To grow you have to get on your own posts upvotes. Since one is not seen at the beginning, it is completely legit to buy a few upvotes from a bot. I was also convinced that it must be possible to grow organically, but I am in this regard disillusioned.
You noticed already that some people will comment only to get an upvote on their comment, without saying anything about your post ...but i think it it easy to recognize them. The steemit world is not different from the real world - people doing everything to get money 😉.
Oh yes the money ..you said if it's only for crypto you could buy some...but steemit is not about buying money - it is about creating. You get a reward for investing time and the contribution of good content.
In the beginning the reward is very very little but if you grow, the reward grows also. So you lose nothing - except time.
The main work in the beginning is to learn how steemit works, find like minded people, get followers, find the right people to follow, post some good quality content and comment on other peoples stuff.
I think you can contribute very interesting content to steemit but you have to take the initial hurdle....speaking for me also 😉....
And to get back to the beginning of your post, there are quite a few in your age or older here on steemit...don't feel old 😃

Oh yes the money ..you said if it's only for crypto you could buy some...but steemit is not about buying money - it is about creating. You get a reward for investing time and the contribution of good content.
In the beginning the reward is very very little but if you grow, the reward grows also. So you lose nothing - except time.

Yes, but No. Sure you can try and do it without making a financial investment, but IMO the rate of growth is so slow most people will give up. Even adding 50SP (Steem Power) which today would be less then $100 US makes it so your vote is at least something. When you first start you aren't even giving out 1 cent votes. It takes a couple hundred votes from brand new people to even make $1 worth of upvote. That isn't me trying to be mean, but just honest. If you want to leave a comment hoping for an upvote it helps if your vote has value to the author. Some posts get hundreds of comments, those are probably not the ones to be focused on. Look for smaller authors that have a smaller following as you will stand out better there.

As for using bots, there are a couple minnow focused bots that give much higher vote value which are actually profitable. @earthnation-bot is one that comes to mind. Just make sure your post is quality. Find this type of bot and use them whenever you can at the start to boost your rewards and then use that to keep buying more and more votes. Just be careful to purchase profitable votes as many of the auction style bid bots are going to cost you more then you gain and should be avoided IMO. Try and find ones that directly upvote with a set rate based on your payment.

Thank you @thedarkhorse for commenting my comment! I totally understand what you are saying and i also agree with you. When you are focused to make some money and don't want to wait for years it is necessary to invest something. But if you don't care about the money and you just like the platform for bonding with like minded people, learning about new stuff, having good conversations and sharing some of your -whatever you are into- stuff, then you just can get on and do what i described, isn't it? ;)
Thank you also for pointing out to use profitable bots.

It seemed to me that @beestrong was was a little focused on the lack of response and profit from the intro post. To gain more exposure and profits when you first start it really helps to invest a little money into the system as your voice does get heard a little louder when you can reward those that take the time to comment on your posts. I have found that by upvoting those who comment on my posts with at least 5 cents and sometimes up to a full 100% vote which has been around 15 cents that people tend to come back more often.

I purchased 200 SP and the rest is earned, but I also purchased 100 Steem to play with. That is I pay for votes when I see ones that will be profitable, I've rented SP and then over the lease earn the Steem/SBD back, and even will trade Steem for SBD between here and bittrex to earn a small profit when they aren't trading at even values.

That investment allowed me to grow much faster and not be talking to myself. I do more then enough of that in real life...or at least I feel like I am as my kids seem to not hear me half the time...lol.

But yes you can do it the slow way and make some gains as you move along. There is nothing wrong with this if you have the time to invest and aren't worried about the monetary gains vs time invested. I just knew to keep my interest that there would need to be monetary gains or I wouldn't stay focused. Plus I have a plan for what this money can turn into long term and jump starting that was well worth dumping a few hundred dollars into.

You convinced me to invest a little something in my steempower ... so you get my first upvote with a little more value😉. And I think, as you say, that it really helps to be focused also on the money, otherwise you will probably give up quickly if you are not the born blogger. So thanks again for your invested time to comment!

See that 0.01 showing up vs 0.00 looks so much better!! It is a good time to invest in SP IMO, at least better then any point in 2018. Hopefully you see a good return long term.

I'm not a naturally blogger and find commenting on others content to be much more up my ally. But I blog a couple times per week to keep building my account. Side note I do upvote comments on my posts pretty much across the board as long as they are real comments...don't say "nice post". So if you follow me expect that I will reward your time with my votes. Heck a comment from @beestrong is how I ended up here. When I see smaller members leaving a comment I try to visit their blogs and leave a couple votes on their content to help boost them. Anyways hope to see you around and glad to see you put a little into your account!!!

Yeh - i love the 0.01 😃....i'm also not a natural blogger but maybe i become one. I came here for sharing my music but as i can't produce a song every day or every week i also comment more on other peoples content and i post some stuff in between. And no worries ..i would never just say 'nice post' or even commenting on things i'm not interestet in...that's totally against my nature. Sooo i'm glad we had this conversation ..was fruitful :) ...see you for sure around!

Hi @thedarkhorse,

I totally agree with you. I even invested 200 euro. 100 when SDB was around 5.5USD and another 100 when it was on 2.5USD ... why everything "crashes" when I invest in it? 😝
But I still think, it's a good idea - especially now.

By the way - @earthnation-bot just announced:

@everyone. Steemit has gone through some drastic changes recently. Of most significant note, every previously existing profitable upvote service is no longer distributing profitable upvotes.
This means it is not really worth most authors time to use steemit.
It also means the EN guild boosting system is no longer profitable. For those that wish to continue usage of EN Boosts for additional publicity, you are free to do so. All current boosts will be refunded. Resend the bid amount if you wish to carry through with a non-profitable boost for additional publicity.
Minimum up-vote guarantees for boosts are no longer valid. Expect a 220-240% up-vote that will result in a 5-20% loss.

At the moment @minnowbooster still gives 275% back but I'm pretty sure it will change soon also.

And now my curiosity comes up ... may I ask you how you found this post?
I'm asking because I could imagine that @beestrong might be interested. Not many steemians with a reputation like yours find, upvote and comment on posts of newcomers.

Happy steeming!

Lol...okay you guys
@pundito
@thedarkhorse
@psionic-tremors
I literally have no ideeeeeaaaa what anyone of you are talking about lol..😅😅😅
My head is spinning at all this information.
I am sure that in a few months as I continue using learning the basics, i will one day understand what you're all saying lol as i am sure some of it will help me in the longer term support others starting out.
In the meantime, im gonna trust the process and the people around me.
Its got me this far in my life and its a good life.
@thedarkhorse
Apparently you have abit of a rep here, which sadly i have no appreciation of whatsoever. But i really do appreciate your time and comments. Just so sorry i dont understand.
It has been really enjoyable just watching you all chat together and nice feeling knowing that my little post is creating something interesting.
I now have a list of about 20 subjects to read about and learn but if I focus on that im gonna miss the chance to connect and comment and that is where i am at right now....
Thanks so much

Don't worry @beestrong ...you will understand more and more after a while. Just learn how everything works at your own pace while you are commenting and connecting to people. 😃 If I did not have my boyfriend @pundito, i would have been lost at the beginning. And i'm still a bit confused but : learning by doing 🙃

Apparently you have abit of a rep here, which sadly i have no appreciation of whatsoever.

Don't think I have any rep yet, just a minnow working on growing my account with a little more experience then you have. I tend to research everything to death to fully understand what I'm doing.

If you have questions just ask. There are LOTS of people out there that are willing to help. Including many that are way more knowledgeable then myself.

And take your time. You are learning an entirely new platform so expect a learning curve.

I bought 200SP and 100 steem that I use for upvotes and SP rentals. Always allowing the balance of SBD/steem to get back to 100 each couple weeks to make sure I'm not loosing money on here. Really thinking of buying another 200SP with the lower price right now.

At 220-240% you might actually be profitable right now. Everyone uses 25% curation, but that isn't actually true. It would be if nobody including the author upvoted before the 30 minute mark. I have a number of people that autovote my posts around 25 minutes so part of the curation comes back to me, plus I upvote when I post which lowers the curation a little. Think that most posts give out around 18% to curation vs the 25% that is expected...and some of the larger accounts on here can get that down to 10% with their own large upvote at 0 minutes. Another advantage of having some voting weight.

Minnowbooster is a great service and one I would highly suggest using whenever possible for a new member. If you can guarantee a profit why wouldn't you pay for a bid?

Thanks for the explanation @thedarkhorse!
I believe your thoughts here are absolutely right.
Also, another investment will be perfectly timed right now.

I'm really looking for $1.50 US, not sure why but it feels like the right number to me and I tend to trust my gut. Been say that would be the bottom for a month now. If it hits the $1.50 it will probably be a 200 steem purchase so I can lock in the slider bar even without my SP rentals. Really think that steemit becomes much more enjoyable once you can vary your votes with the sliderbar.

Thanks @psionic-tremors. Im glad i shared my thoughts. I wont give up but i am for the shorter term going to limit number of hours a day on here. Positively just this post has generated a few quality beautiful and authentic replies. All part of the learning curve...and thanks for your time in replying to me..i really appreciate it.😊

Your post reads like my inner voice in my early steemit posts. The first things I saw here where the begging and the I follow you - you follow me behavior. I didn't know anybody and I didn't know where to start. I very slowly started to find interesting people and I decided not to be shy and started to leave comments on interesting posts. But I didn't like the feed because of the rubbish I had to scroll through. I started to have fun the moment I looked up people who left interesting comments. There I found people who are genuine and caring and who made interesting blogs. When I found somebody I liked I leave a comment, something longer then 'nice post, here is my upvote'. If they don't react I move on. I don't want to be a groupie or a follower, i want to have connections. If I get a reaction thats friendly and longer than 'thnx' I come back another day to see if it is still an interesting person. If I make a connection with somebody I will look them up at least weakly but mostly it is more because they also look me up and thus we speak almost daily.

Please don't think the people here are only very technical or only young. The ages here are very different and frankly don't matter most of the time. I made friends here with people 20 years older (at least) en 10 years younger (at least) most of my connection I don't even know the age.

Fellow barbara. Thankyou for taking time for genuine connection and for the advice. It was a shock i have to say...me in my la la la land.....just the replies today have lit a little fire of hope for something more genuine. Thats a good idea checking out the people with good comments. I also want to make sure my comments are of value and give people my time and attention. Like now, im about to go out and feel hurried to reply. Thats not ideal, so im teaching myself behaves for me to follow to value those who reply to me..thankyou. I'm settig aside tome.this afternoon and am going to.enjoy reading though your posts and @psionic-tremors @pundito and findinh out more about what we have in common.
Thanks again have a beautiful day wherever you are.

Thank you so much! I know that feeling of rush. It belongs to fast social media where you have to be fast to have relevance, that fastness doesn't fit me and I actually have to unlearn that. If you find your connection's you will see that fastness isn't as important as quality and genuine replying. Like what we are now doing. I truly hope you will find the positive sides of steemit more apparent then the negative in some time. And yes, for almost everybody the beginning is hard and difficult (unless you already have several friends here who help you out).

Oh I almost forgot, my name isn't Barbara. Although I like that name a lot. Barbaarse means Barbaric in Dutch and Evelien is a dutch female name. My actual name is Sanne.

Well sanne i am so pleased to have met and connected with you..

I think so too :) I believe you will find your way. Wisdom is worth a lot but it will take some time to grow

Hi @beestrong!
I'm 100% with you and with @psionic-tremors comment.
It is almost impossible to find people of the same interest on steemit and it's a shame that your valuable words will drown in the massive upload of other posts.
Nobody will recognize them - no matter how valuable and interesting they might be.
So what to do to find the right followers with the same interests?
As @psionic-tremors said: look for other posts with same interests. Comment as hell and build up followers that find your posts valuable.
And what might be even more important: join Discord groups.
If you look around you will find groups/people with the same interests and they will gather on a Discord channel. They are chatting and discussing things there and you can be sure they have the same interests.
Hope this helps a bit :)
If you have further questions feel free to contact me.
I resteemed your post because I think it's interesting for others to read and think about.

@Pundito. Thanks for the advice. As i said to @psionic-tremors i am definately setting a daily time limit and a few small goals for that time. Like i said in my #introduceself ive managed to create what i feel is freedom and after over 10 hours chained to laptop and phone writing one big posting didnt feel very liberating. I find that when folks say oh go on steemit its like facebook but you get paid (maybe in the long term) its a slightly rude awakening when you actually get here. Lol 😊 again not giving up..not my sytle...deep breathe and keep seeking people who will add to my life and who hopefully i can add too mutually. Thanks resteem...gonna have to look that up and understand what that is. Oh and thanks for discord connection (????) Oh my days what to do on steemit list is already growing...😊

Fun fact, I have found you because pundito resteemed your post. We also just met today on a discord channel.

Oh fab...ill have a look at discord tomorrow....big thanks to @pundito...

You are welcome @beestrong.
Here a link that will bring you to a community that wants to help new users (also called Minnows). https://discord.gg/q7zSAQS
They are a part of the MSP (Minnow Support Project) and also have a radio channel on that server. It is called Minnow Support Radio or MSP-Waves Radio. You can listen to them via the link on their website or directly on the Discord server.
Actually, I had some problems in the beginning to understand and navigate in Discord (no matter if you use it on the website or download the app) but after looking around a bit I found more and more interesting channels.
There are channels for everything and interests.
The one I've send you the link for is in my eyes a good beginning. That's where I also started.
Just to mention: Discord initially has no direct connection technically to steemit but it's a perfect tool to bring people together with the same interests on steemit. You meet people on Discord and follow each other on steemit if the chemistry is right.
Happy steeming!
P.S.: if you need help on Discord just shout ;) I'll try to help.

Thank you
Utter overwhelm....lol..

I can’t blame you for having those concerns. I think we’ve all been there.
I came here just because of crypto, but I haven’t been discussing crypto in months.crypto is only a part of this very diverse community.
During my first two weeks on the platform, I felt completely lost. There was so much to learn I didn’t know where to start first. I didn’t even know if I would be able to process it all.
Then, I bumped into a couple of great comunities - there are litterally hundreds here on SteemIt. It was the #newbieresteemday initiative that pulled me over the line, and made me decide to stay. I’m glad I did, because although there may be a lot of things that don’t really make sense on this platform, there’s one thinh that does, and that’s the community. Never in my entire life I met so many good hearted people who are willing to support eachother. I was (and I still am) surprised that it was actually possible to get to know so many people with so many different backgrounds, and become personally attached to them without even having met them. I’ve only been here for a couple of months, and I consider a lot of my fellow Steemians to be my friends, my familiy, my tribe...
I never really was a community-minded person before, but that has changed since I started to interact with people here.
Feel free to drop by at the #newbieresteemday initiative any time you like. We’re all just a bunch of misfits trying to help eachother and the little guys in any way we can, having a lot of fun. You can find us in Discord: https://discord.gg/h9WfHrE if you have questions, or just want to have a laugh or rant about something. There’s someone around most of the time.
I can honestly say that signing up for SteemIt (and staying) was one of the best decisions I made this last year. Not because of the money, but because I have learned so much, and met so many lovely, real people....

P.s.: the #newbieresteemday members’ first priority is to help newcomers to get a little attention. Most of us are only small users ourselves, but by supporting eachother and others all the way through, we can make it work. For example, some of our members organize a special newbieresteemday, during which posts by newcomers are being resteemed to get more exposure.
Actually, my fellow member @bashadow is running one today: https://steemit.com/justbecause/@bashadow/my-steemit-newbie-resteem-post-week-10

Commenting on posts that interest you is the first step towards building relationships. And in my experience, most people are very welcoming towards new members.

IMHO, it’s more than worth it to give it a shot. The first couple of weeks can be pretty confusing, because there are a lot of different aspects to SteemIt, but once you get the hang of it, and get to bump into the same people a couple of times, connections can be made, even friendships can be build - although this may sound strange from where you’re standing. In that way Steemit differs from any other social media/blogging platform.

Let’s make a deal: struggle your way through that first month (I think that’s what we all did) and let us meet up for an evaluation afterwards. I’m sure you’ll feel completely different then than you are now
Remember to join us on Discord - we’re there to answer every question you might have, and to support you to get through the hardest part, which is the beginning. You won’t regret it, I am 100% sure of that :0)

Ill be on discord by end of today and ill checkout the #newbieresteemday
Thankyou truly thankyou

Thank you @simplymike so much for an encouraging reply. Im not even at the end of first week although its close. I will be going onto discord as it seems better for initial connection rather than a small whisper on a steemit which weighted towards the successful or technically more skilled and experienced which any one of us can be in the long run...im gonna hang on in there....and the support here is overwhelming...

It takes a while when trying to build yourself organically. I have over 5000 comment/post of those about 175 are actual Post/Blogs. I forget the number but pretty close to that. I have been on steemit for 230 days, so less than a Blog/Post a day. I have no money of my own to invest in steemit, so what I have is what I have gained from the initial amount steem gave me. I was fortunate recently to have been given some out of the blue totally unexpected SP, to try and help me get to that magic get your slider level. (almost there).

Until their kind delegation put me over the top and gave me that magic 500SP I was struggling learning and using steemworld.org manual voter. I learned how to use it, I shared that knowledge with a few others, and off to the vote races we all went.

Like @simplymike said: (this applies for anyone reading this you are all welcome)

@simplymike....on my way lol
And massive thankyou for resteem
I wish i knew how to repay but learning cyrve is a steep one and im struggling to hang on myself lol

Hey @beestrong welcome to steemit! I agree with a lot of what you say and I think your success on the platform depends a lot on your definition of success. I am not an expert on steemit as I only joined just over five months ago but I've met some cool people. I am not quite sure how I stumbled upon them but I did (as I stumbled upon this post and now got to know you). I think you need to treat it like any other social media if you don't plan to generate any real income from it but if you do plan to use it to make money, having some SP really helps and there is no way around investing tons of time. I don't want to plug my post here in your blog but if you are interested in seeing if my friends are people you would get along with, please drop by and see what we are talking about. I think it will be relevant to you after reading your post.
Look forward to seeing you around.
xx Lucy

Cheers @lucygarrod
Kind of where i am at.
Please drop me your blog. Id love to read it.

Im kind of rolling this way...
if someone connects with me and really talks to me as you have and a few others, then I reply with same consideration and appreciation.
I @ their name and press their little green arrow-upvote(in the hope that this is a helpful thing to do re steem etc)
I then go check out their blog and look for commonalities, vibes, opinions.
I read some of their content, maybe add at least one comment if of value and I do often follow.

And that is about all i feel qualified to do.
I do know how to @ other people to give them credit and connection if i think they can assist another user and thats about it right now

Gonna be looking into discord
Mentioned to me by @simplymike and @bashadow

Hey Barbara,

I don't post that often but here are a couple of posts you might find interesting. They aren't big money spinners (as you'll see ;) ) but I enjoyed the human interaction - met some new people :)

This is post 1

Here is post 2
https://steemit.com/mspsteem/@lucygarrod/advice-from-one-minnow-to-another-part-2

I am hopeless with discord - I really don't know what I am doing when I am there :) lol but I will definitely try it out again and drop by #newbieresteemday !

See you soon
