There was a romantic notion of the ancient Greeks and Romans as free farmers also serving as soldiers-at-need. The Jeffersonians attempted to recreate this romance when the United States became independent. Of course reality and romance are different things, but our society would be much better if we all got our hands dirty producing the basics for life. If not farm service, we could mine some coal or fell some timber!
