I always hear from the people who normally can not read books that they really wanted to read books but couldn’t start reading beacuse of boredom, feeling sleepy, etc. At first I hadn’t paid any attention to those excuces. However, after those excuces became too frequent, I realized that they had a point. So, how come I read books for hours but they can’t? I thought the answer is habit.
The main reason of me reading books for several hours is that I got used to it. When you start to hit the gym, the first days will be very difficult but after time passes, if not giving up, this action becomes a habit.
Selecting the right books are very critical for construct the reading habbit. I’m going to describe the characteristics of the beginning books and then I will prepare suggestion list.
Let’s start!
1. Starting from the Scratch
My first advice is choosing the books that were written with simple wording. If you start with Nietzsche’s books you would most probably fail.
2. Reading Thin Books
After finding simple wording books, next thing to do is selecting thin books. This would help you to finish.
3. Selecting Page Turner Books
Although it has a great literate value, the book which is about existantialism and meaningless of life is not good for starters. Before getting the habit, being bored is the main problem for beginners. Therefore you should stay clear of these hard to read books.
4. Reading Every Day
It is very important point. You shoul read books every and each day until get bored. Even if you think that “I will get bored if I’m reading this book right now”, read it until you get bored. However do not give up reading book every day!
Here is the my suggestions for starters
1. John Steinbeck – Of Mice and Men
2. Ernest Hemingway – Old Man and The Sea
3. Edgar Allan Poe – The Murders in The Rue Morgue
4. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle – The Hound of The Baskervilles
5. Jack London – The Call of The Wild
6. Gogol – A Madman’s Diary
7. Amin Maalouf – Samarkand
8. Robert Louis Stevenson – Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde
9. Mark Twain – The Prince and The Pauper
10. Agatha Christie – Murder on The Orient Express
If only one person who reads this article gains the habit of reading books, it means victory for me.
