I don't necessarily agree. My understanding of anarchy is that it's based upon voluntary association, but in this instance as an example, voluntarily associating oneself with anarchist philosophy by labeling oneself an anarchist. To say a person doesn't understand anarchy because they label themselves an anarchist is to claim that you understand anarchy better than they do, which sound kind of oxymoron(ish) when considering the original argument you make.
I'm sure there are many people out there who claim to be anarchist but do not abide by anarchist principles, but to use your argument as a rule of thumb would be logically fallible.
It is one thing to say you like the anarchist philosophy(ideology) of voluntary association, it is another to label oneself as that ideology. I am not making any claims as you say, it is a statement about ideology and self-identifying with an ideology. When people self-identify with an ideology, that is when they find justification for extreme wrongdoing. Religious wars are a classic example of what can happen when there is self-identifying with an ideology. It could be said, the root of all evil is self-identifying with an ideology they become ruled by the dogma of that ideology.
When someone self-identifies with anarchy, I find it ironic, because it is an ideology and how can you be voluntary if it is the central tenet or dogma of the ideology. Plus Anarchy means no ruler as a literal interpretation, by self-identifying with it, it becomes your ruler.
Ideologies are the great dividers of humanity.
